Lata could not get infected with this strange fungus that invaded this part of the Forest. Only the vast fields of the black flower and the borders of the bird's possessions remained untouched; the disease, apparently, could not cross invisible boundaries. Lata compiled a description of the fungus based on the remains of the former sites and ancient settlements - on the bones it felt great, growing lush caps.
Only once did she manage to catch a still living host: the chick fell out of the nest overgrown with mushrooms and crawled, apparently in search of food. Initially, he was noticed by Raven, who was attracted by a strange tremor of mycelium on the ground. When Lata brushed off the top caps, she found that the mushrooms had grown through the body of the cub and went down with thin mycelium roots into the ground.
The chick stopped showing signs of life after a few minutes and calmed down. When Lata opened his body, she did not find any internal organs: everything was replaced by a dense, spongy substance, similar to the stem of a mushroom; only the brain remained intact. Apparently, the host remained conscious until the very end.
