Hanukkah Explained

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah. Happy Hanukkah to those who celebrate! I just posted my quick introduction to the holiday (and of course I snuck in some basic religious literacy methodology) :)

Cool video. Congrats on the postdoc. What's the project?

Great video, but I do think that it should have been mentioned that the 1 Macabees story underpins Hanukkah isn't in the TaNaKh/Hebrew Bible. Also although from the perspective of mainline contemporary Judaism Judith fits the definition of apocryphal, I'm a little torn on referring to Judith as apocryphal for three reasons: 1st I think when most people hear apocryphal they think heretical (I'm aware that the use of that word from a Religious studies perspective can be awkward) because that is the status of the most talked about apocryphal Christian books (most notably all of the apocryphal Gospels); 2nd its status in Christian communities is disputed with Catholic and the various Orthodox communities recognizing it as Canonical, but most protestant not (in Christian discussions Dueterocanonical probably the best non question begging term, it may be a bit out of place to apply this to Judaism), 3rd the Ethiopian Beta Isreal Jews do treat it as part of their Canon, although they are a relatively small not "mainline" tradition. Again great video though. What's the post doc studying?
