The undercover Romulan telling La'an about how time kept trying to correct itself and that this was originally supposed to happen in 1992 was a reference not only to the Temporal Wars we saw in the Enterprise series, but also to the original TOS episode "Space Seed" in which Khan and his people left Earth in the Botany Bay in 1996. But that Khan never existed but eventually he did, but at a later time in the 21st Century, because of time reasserting its correct flow. This was also foreshadowed in season 2 of "Picard". But it is a convenient retcon or reset if you will of the Khan story by Star Trek writers.

After that movie was released, the city of Riverside, Iowa declared that they were the "future" birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk. They even have a monument there about it. Well, at the end of this episode Kirk tells La'an that he was born in Riverside, Iowa, thus making the city's proclamation decades ago Star Trek reality.
