There are writers who just wing it. Typically called "pantsers". As if flying by the seat of their pants. They enjoy the freedom of discovery and having the story evolve organically. The ones who do go in great detail with outlines, character sheets, story beats, etc., are called "plotters". :) Both ways work ultimately depending on the person as long as one keeps his/her butt in the chair, so to speak.
