Funny story, I just saw my mother for the first time in 24 years (not the funny part), She's a retired Chicago Police officer with 30+ years on the force. We really don't see eye to eye on anything but I keep most of it to myself. But at one point she made some political rant about socialism and how people don't know what it really is or what they're getting into. At that I had to stop her and say "Um, everything you have and everything in your life you feel proud about is because of socialism. You weren't private security paid by a corporation for 30 years, you were an employee of the state, paid by the taxpayers, to perform a duty for the state and its citizens. The fact that you are making more now in retirement than you did while working is because your union, in combination with the city and taxpayers, decided that was the right thing to do. If you were private sector you'd be lucky to get any retirement you didn't save up for yourself, and you probably would have been fired a year before you were eligible to receive retirement benefits, something I've seen happen to half a dozen co-workers over the last 10 years." She didn't have an answer for any of that.

LOD is a smart man, I enjoy hearing him talk when he isn't delivering "the news" on MSNBC. I don't always agree with him, but I can say that about most people.

I've been posting educational videos about socialism on my Facebook page with the warning, "Scary word alert!" My hope is that this is a way to challenge people to watch the videos that is lighthearted and will make them ask why the word is scary. Most of my friends will probably have no problem with socialism, but my family is the target audience.
