To provide the context you are missing from Discovery leading into Strange New Worlds: Pike took command of Discovery at the beginning of the second season. He left Lt. Cmdr. Una Chin-Riley (Number One - played by Majel Barrett in "The Cage") in temporary command of Enterprise. Pike refers to her as "Number One". Spock is introduced in another episode, and they visit Talos IV and the aliens that we saw in "The Cage". Pike visits the Klingon monastery on Boreth and picks up a time crystal and sees his future demise via the delta radiation and confinement in the life support chair. The Discovery is combating a sentient AI named "Control" which runs Section 31. The AI is defeated on Discovery but to prevent it from returning they take the ship into the future (the 32nd Century) through a wormhole with the Enterprise's help. That's the "zero event" that the aliens in episode one see. Spock's adopted sister, Michael Burnham, led the Discovery through the wormhole. That's the "loss of your sister" that Pike refers to when he said that to Spock. As for this episode, Dr. M'Benga isn't new, we saw him in a couple of original series episodes as one of the doctors working for Dr. McCoy. Lt. Samuel Kirk is James T. Kirk's older brother. We saw him when he was killed in "Operation: Annihilate!". William Shatner played his dead brother in that scene.

Doctor M'Benga appears twice in TOS and is mentioned a few times. Number 1/Una: Is Number 1 from The Cage/Menagerie also played by Majel

Did you miss hear the entire crew beaming down there? No, you didn't. However, the crew was just Una [Not the Noonien Singh Number 1], and the 2 scientists. That is what you missed.

Also stopped watching Discovery, but after 3 seasons. I can tell you, it's not going to get better at any point, only weirder. Can't even say that 'wokeness' was my problem, whatever that is. I think that's a made up term. Star Trek was always progressive and liberal. My problem with Discovery was just a huge lack of love for Trek. They tried to redesign Trek in many ways, the writing was horrible, the characters were horrible and mostly unlikeable. I was used to characters making intelligent decisions based on sanity, not emotions. But Discovery was emotional drama and a lot of tears and crying for no reason. No thanks. Would love to see Deep Space 9 reactions. Till then, have much fun with strange new worlds, it's great.

I’m all for a DS9 rewatch

The stuff you missed from Discovery was pretty much explained in the exposition in the episode. Only characters who appeared on Discovery were Pike, Spock and the first officer they rescued (who is Majel’s character from The Cage). This series takes place sometime after The Cage. The doctor is a TOS character from Private Little War and That Which Survives. They referred to the transporter chief as Chief Kyle so he might be Kyle from TOS as well. I’m watching this for the first time as well. Ethan Peck does a good job as Spock. His portrayal in Discovery kept taking me out of it but that’s fixed here. He comes from a good acting family his grandfather was Gregory Peck.

110% would be interesting in a DS9 re-watch. It's been a while for me too.
