I know you kept watching on, but yes, catching up with this and its worth keeping on. Btw, when they said 30ft it was 30ft PER SECOND, so they were going too fast and hence the talk about not "falling into orbit". They needed the extra fuel to slow down enough to stay in orbit. So although not shown, Ellen would have refueled and then slowed their command module down into stable orbit. Ed would then have taken it back to Earth. In regards to earlier with the lifeboat, it was simply the command module and lunar module that the three of them arrived with. When Gordo/Danielle left to go home, they took the only way back (What they arrived with). So the only way to get back to having another "lifeboat", is sending two to the moon. As a side note, you should watch "Masters of the Air", also on apple TV.
