Nope. Comics never explain it, HOWEVER Robert Kirkman in an interview once said when asked about the cause... "space spores." There was an alternative (non canon) comic series, Rick Grimes 2000, where it does actually talk about Aliens being the cause of the apocalypse... So pollution from outer space with no explanation is really the best we can guess, at this point

2025-02-02 03:12:09 +0000 UTCAs far as I know it is never explained how everyone got this latent infection. I never read the comics so maybe they've explained it there. As far as turning is considered, you turn when you die and only when you die. Getting bit, as far as I understand it, infects the body with a lethal sickness that kills you (not itself turns you), which is why cutting of an arm/leg works. You prevent the "2nd" deadly infection from spreading so the person doesnt die and therefore wont turn. You could think of it as a two part poison. One part allone is harmless and can stay in the body without doing anything, but as soon as the second compound is added you are in trouble.
