That opening scene is especially striking because of the contrast with other (lesser) shows. In any other show the military guy would be gung-ho ready to kill everyone while the scientist begs for more time. This time you have a military guy who is out of his depth and scared and then the scientist calmly and thoughtfully instructs him to kill everyone. It's so much more dramatic and believable.

To anwser your question: This show is made by Neil Druckman himself (the original Game Director at Naughty Dog) and Craig Mazin (who made Chernobyl and played the game multiple times). They know what they are doing. For everey episode, they also released a podcast together with Troy Baker (who played Joel in the games), where they go in depth and explain the changes they made etc. It is quit informativ and good.
