Hershel and Dr. S where talking in episode 2 about it being a form of the flu that is contracted commonly through pigs or birds. Rick said he wasn’t sure if they themselves made the pigs sick or they got sick on their own. That was one of the reasons why Rick sacrificed the pigs to draw the walkers away.
