You don't think that there are many people that can be labeled broadly as good, and others bad? Of course, no one is a saint, and it certainly is difficult to judge someone who is a product of their time. But there are many people who have gone their entire lives without committing grave injustices against others, no? Also, I'm no expert, but from what I've gathered, Witch-hunts wouldn't really have started for another 400 years after this point in time. And even if they had, there's no way for you to know that this village specifically would have engaged in that, right? Sure, given the circumstances and his goals, Askeladd had "no choice" but to do what he did to those villagers. But he chooses to lead a life that puts him in the kind of situations that don't favor empathy as a solution; which I feel like is the whole point of the show. Sure, there may have been antiquated notions of social arrangements, but I don't really buy the narrative that nobody before the 20th century had something resembling a conscience. All this being said, I could buy an argument that Askeladd did what he did because he felt it would ultimately benefit Wales. Still a tough pill to swallow, but its more sensible, I guess...

I feel like you guys should understand that there is no such thing as good and evil people. There are merely people doing both good and bad things in order to live how they think they should live. Let's not forget that as soon as those villagers see a woman who can read they would claim she is a witch and burn her alive or drown her. Ashkeladd and his men also had to do what they did in order to survive the winter and make sure Torkell doesn't find out where they are. Though in the end a true warrior needs no sword.

Yeah this is one of the heaviest episodes of the series. I think it's in there just to show the realities of the time and to pump the brakes on ya if you started to like Askeladd a little too much lol
