external causes -> internal character -> desires/will -> choice -> action When a person makes a decision they make that decision because that was what they willed. Their will is an effect that is determined by causes such as who they are. The will itself never determines itself because an effect cannot be its own cause, and an effect cannot be the cause of its own causes. You can't put the cart before the horse. Some people will take this to mean that we do not have free will (hard determinists). Hard determinists will say that free will is the ability to do otherwise and if your will is caused then you could not do otherwise. This ultimately means that one cannot be held responsible for their actions. Good, bad, ugly, or whatever. However, this is not the traditional definition of free will. Traditionally, free will is defined as being able to do what you have internally willed. You are responsible for actions that flow from internal character and desires even though those things are ultimately caused by external forces. The only actions you are not accountable for are actions that bypass your internal character or desires. So, you're not responsible for actions you take while you are drugged or mind controlled. My point in all of that is just to say that Eren freely chose the rumbling because his choice arose from his internal character and desires. Eren is a violent and aggressive person who has spent his whole life fighting and killing his enemies. He wants to protect his family and friends, he wants revenge, and he wants to remake the world so that it reflects his and Armin's dream. Did he get to choose his nature? No. Did he get to choose what he would desire? Nope. But despite all of that his actions arose from his internal character and desires which means that he is responsible for them. Eren's may be a tragic victim of circumstance, but that does not mean he's innocent. Consider how Eren's actions compare to America's actions at the end of World War 2. Did we really not have a choice when we nuked Nagasaki and Hiroshima? Should no one be held responsible for the evil they commit because their internal character and desires were determined by external causes? Seems unlikely to me.

I recently just understood that this happened because when he inherited the titan, he was a still a garden variety idiot kid who thought the world sucked based on learning from Armin's book. Then he grew up, saw the world, got sadder about it, but the fate was sealed. If he ,as a child, was a better kid like Armin, new ending.

love molly's commentary on eren in this one

Chandler Smith

I’m on mollys side about this, y’all have a discussion about it after the final movie, but regardless of how you feel, you’re neither right or wrong, it’s all about perspective

Anthony Orozco

Joaquin garcia

Joaquin garcia

and technically i dont think he had a choice so I'm with molly on this one, if he dint do this paradis would be demolished sadly as we already know when willy gave the speech he declared war on paradis

Harry

now you know why eren was crying in episode 28 when mikasa went looking for him

The 2 prisoners left were the grandparents of Eren and Zeke It seems that they were arrested after Marley discovered that Zeke was working with Eldia and as expected from the Marleyans they were left alone in prison when the rumbling approached.

Tatakae!

I have never been so morally uncomfortable, yet inspired by the beautiful brutality as of the opening 10-15 mins of this episode. It's evil, it's tragic, it's painful to watch. To feel sympathy for a Genocidal mass murderer while in the act of committing it. I mean, our paragon of Heroism, Armin has mass murdered hundreds of civilians and children at Liberio. Isayama is not asking us to have conclusive answers about anything. He is asking us to find any way possible to resolve problems before the final resort (represented by Eren's Genocide her) seems to be the only answer. Isayama is a master.
