Remember what the lead scientist Dresden said, "we can only learn by letting *it* learn" concerning the protomonclue. Yes they were using lasers to grow the protomonclue in Julies body. Just like they radiated all the people they had in those "shelters", where Miller and Holden got radiated. You have to remember, this is about 300 yrs in the future..where they grow most of the meat they eat in tanks and are able to grow replacement organs for people the same way. Miller was worse off because of his age and the fact that he is a belter so many of his defences are weak by nature. Holden is a young, fit and strong earther, much healthier and in way better shape :)

I noticed if it's a long post and more than a couple of edits then it sometimes gets deleted.

was something wrong with my comment? Got deleted? Had no spoilers in it as far as I'm aware...

It is not a spoiler to say, recall when Miller was interogating the guy who shipped Julie out and was talking about when they were in the mines and he says: She never shed a tear over the fact that she had to take anti cancer drugs for the rest of her life. Medicine in the 23rd century has come a long way from our century. My favorite line in this episode (which won a Hugo award) was when Amos says to Miller: you guys are pretty messed up, the machine (an Auto doc) keeps trying to switch to Hospice." As a Palliative Care md, I found that line pretty funny. Also you asked why Holden wasn't as sick as Miller. Holden does vomit just when he meets Kenzo (I watched carefully for that) so he is reacting to the radiation (which was only in the shelter so the other crew members weren't exposed) but he is not reacting quite as quickly. The younger the person, the better able to withstand the radiation and repair the damage for example. However with the doses they received, they are both in serious trouble. Loved watching this with you! On to Season 2!

I'm glad that you're getting into the show. Surprisingly this show continues to ramp up through S2 and beyond. The reason that Holden is doing better than Miller because Holden is from Earth and has a more robust physiology than the Belters. Several episodes ago, a doctor mentioned that the average life expectancy of Belters is 68 while for Earthers it's 120. Also I'm sure there are some medical advances in treating radiation poisoning in 200 plus years. But they are in pretty bad shape. Amos said he had to override the medical machine because it kept switching into hospice mode.
