The Expanse 1x6 FULL LENGTH + REACTION & REVIEW

Comments

A well named episode. There are a few "rock bottom" stories in this episode, Miller among them but also Uncle Mateo, his nephew Diogo spinning away in space and even Dawes himself talking about the death of his sister. Although Miller probably didn't like hearing that Julie would spit in his face, he also manages to rile Dawes up just enough that he gives up searching his hat and tosses it back to Miller before he finds the chip. Good going on the part of Miller there! Enjoying this rewatch with you. Cool studio!

Just a correction, the old Rock Hoppers used to get tats to cover the neck scars and those tats are what the younger generations are emulating. Dawes does not have one and probably uses his scar as a badge or symbol. (This isn't really covered in the show, just background from the books and podcasts with the authors).

Nice no spoiler recap

Call Me Daddy

You might have noticed that the kid who was spaced was the same kid that Miller busted for stealing water and let go. He has a beacon so hopefully he'll get picked up. This episode really shows the plight of the Belters, particularly the Rock-Hoppers or miners. It also showed the over-used and worn out condition of their space gear. We're so used to seeing in other sci fi that when someone opens their helmet they either flash freeze like Han Solo or their head explodes. That scene demonstrated the reality that if they exhale people can survive about 25 seconds before losing consciousness and the body begins to shut down. I'm sure Rock-hoppers have had a few generations of trial and error of quick on the fly repairs. Dawes points out that his neck scar was caused by the cheap space helmets that were used by early Rock Hoppers. They used to malfunction and burn the neck. You may have noticed that Naomi and other Belters have tats around their neck that emulate those scars. The younger generation has adopted that as a cultural symbol. My favorite line of this episode was, "If Julie were here right now, she'd spit in your face". You could tell that was like a gut punch to Miller because he knew it was at least partly true.
