Patreons wild ride never stops
Added 2022-09-10 17:53:39 +0000 UTCHi everyone! If you have not heard, patreon made a very cool move and laid off it's entire security team to start outsourcing to a third party security. If you have not already, I would highly suggest activating 2FA on your accounts. I will be keeping my account up because I depend on it to support myself, however I will be putting time into looking into different creator support sites to start migrating to.
In the meantime, I want to thank you all very much for the support that's been given to me, its a shame that Patreon seems to want to keep making horrible business decisions in spite of the creators who depend on it.
**EDIT** As far as I know, this does not mean that patreon is suddenly less secure. I have also seen information saying that it was only 5 people as opposed to a whole security team. Which still isn't great, but ya know. This could also be the result of a merger, they could be fully switching to outsourcing, external testers, etc. So after going through as much information possible, I do not THINK there is much danger. DESPITE that I still suggest changing passwords and using 2FA!

Being secure or not just depends on who their 5 security people were vs who this outsource company is. As a software developer, I've seen that just having an in house system doesn't mean it's well built. I think a lot of companies that aren't security critical like banking or healthcare have minimal security systems built in that largely rely on outsourcing teams and/or tools.
