First off, let me say this has to be my favorite stand-alone sketch of my characters that Daryl has made thus far.
Second, meet Gam. She's Norman's grandmother and the leader of the Red Cove coven.
When I first wrote her character into existence, I wanted her to be strong, confident, and highly skilled with magic. I didn't want her to follow that "wise old character type" theme most stories use though because I knew most people would immediately compare her to the likes of Dumbledore.
While she is smart, cunning, and extremely learned in the arts of magic, she struggles to connect with her family and her coven, as she always thinks she knows what's best for them. Through this, I wanted her character to portray that "loving parent of a gay child but has no understanding of how to relate or understand them" trope. In this instance, she tries to be a parent for Norman, but ultimately fails because she never considers Norman's happiness nor does she trust his convictions.
That being said, let me clarify that Gam isn't a villain in this story. She's more like an obstacle for Norman to overcome, but she does genuinely love and care for him, albeit in misguided ways.
As a hint for a future reveal, Gam is not all that she seems. She may appear to be a decrepit, old, wise woman, but looks may be deceiving ;)
