Norman and Cal started out very differently when I first wrote out the beginnings of BKI. First, Cal used to be a werewolf, and Norman's name used to be Dom. They were going to fight crime as a supernatural detective duo/blossoming gay romance. Maybe it's the furry in me, but I love werewolf stories. I'm sure you could totally pick up on it considering I added the whole "soulmates" bit and how wolves mate for life, etc. etc.
And the story wasn't even called "Black Key Incubus" until I had already contacted Daryl about a comic project and written the first script. The story was almost called "9 demons," "Spellbound," and even "My Super Gay Demon Boyfriend."
xD YIKES, right?
Kinda glad I scrapped those ideas for the current storyline, but looking back on them now...they might make for a great addition to the BKI expanded universe.
Speaking of BKI, as in specifically about the title of the story, I don't really know what sparked "Black Key Incubus" to be totally honest. It was catchy in my head and I liked how many syllables it had. It just sounded good to me. But also, it does relate to a part of the story yet to be revealed, so spoiler alert! Lol.
A lot of people say Norman and Cal share a lot of similarities with Daryl's other demonic/human gay couple: Tobias and Guy. To that, I say yeah, there was a bit of influence there. What Tobias and Guy taught me was that love (especially gay love) doesn't have to be complicated. Love can be simple and lusty, but at the same time sweet and wholesome. That's what I wanted for Norman and Cal's relationship.
Before we even started working on BKI, I asked Daryl if it would be okay creating another human/demon gay couple similar to Tobias and Guy and he gave the green light for the project.
