Release 4: "Prodigious Electromancer"

This is going to be a good one. I've made some animations for you to demonstrate the new features.

Template Editor works! Read on past the release info to learn what features are working now.

Release Info

Release Name: "Prodigious Electromancer"

Release Series: Alpha 4 (buggy, only tested in Chrome)

New Feature Overview:

Public Available? Yes

Link: https://beta.editor.paperize.io

Details:

Layer-based Template Editing: Familiar if you've used Adobe-style tools, layers let us separate our visual elements and control which order they are rendered in.

Live PDF Rendering: I can't understate the raw importance of seeing live PDF output while using the editor.

As you work, the preview window re-renders the real PDF, so you get instant feedback to your layout decisions, allowing you to iterate fast and effectively.

3 layers types to use (so far):

Shape Layers: As seen above, we've got rectangles! Not seen above, we've got stroke and fill options! Coming soon: Circles, ellipses, and rounded rectangles

Image Layers: Images can be the same on every item (backgrounds and layout elements), or dynamically driven from the spreadsheet data (card art, faction colors, etc). They can be "fit" or "filled" into the dimensions you set, and they can be horizontally and vertically aligned.

Text Layers: Like images, text can also be static or dynamic, but it can also be both: text templates are very useful for labeling your fields before you've iterated a high-quality visual template. Coming soon: custom fonts and automatic "shrink-to-fit" when text overflows the dimensions set for it.

PDF Layout: Make components of any arbitrary dimensions (not just poker-sized playing cards anymore.) Also set your paper dimensions and printer margins and Paperize will pack in the components optimally for you and your setup. Coming soon: multi-page components, more layout control options.

Still Serverless: No servers were harmed in the production of this Alpha. And no browsers were tracked!

Refer to my previous posts to learn more about what Paperize won't do, as well as exactly what "serverless" means (Patrons-only.)

All in all, this was a huge release!

Hey Jordan, great questions. I'm very sorry that it is so non-obvious what is going on! A fundamental thing about Paperize that is awesome and a bit weird is that there is no server, no central place where your account lives that I control. Currently, all data is saved into the browser you're using. So, about the games you made earlier this year, perhaps you were using a different browser back then? Those games would be with that browser. Or, possibly you've re-installed the browser, or some other thing, that wiped out all of its local data? The stuff that happened this week is a bit stranger (again assuming you didn't change browsers.) Images no longer uploading sounds like maybe your browser cache is completely fully, not sure. You could check the Javascript console for errors and report back, but the point is probably moot because... I'm releasing Alpha 5 this week! Alpha 5 will overhaul how things are stored, using your Google Drive instead of the browser itself. That way you'll never lose things (Google is less likely to mess up than me by about 8 orders of magnitude...) Stay tuned for the announcement this week.

Hey Loren, is there a manual way to save data, or is there an issue with saving? Or was there a data wipe recently? I made a game or two earlier this year that is no longer on my account at all. Also, I did a couple hours of work in a new game earlier this week, adding image files, editing templates, assigning data sources, etc. Now today I open the game and there are no image files and the component I was working on is completely empty and reset like a brand new component. Tried logging out and back in, but no change, everything's gone. EDIT - Also, I can no longer upload images. When I try, it loads for a quick second, and then the image library displays again with no new images added. Tried deleting all images out of the library, logging out and back in, and uploading another image. Still doesn't show up in the image library.

Hey Stefan! Thanks for being here! My apologies for the lack of introductory help material at the moment. A big update is coming out very soon and I'm focused on that currently. If you're adventurous and you'd like to try to use the current version now anyway, here's the general steps you go through: - New Game - New Component - Add Source (this connects to a Google Spreadsheet) - Edit Template - Add Layers to render the Source - Print the Game And if you want to use Image layers, you'll have to upload some Images to use and specify their names in an Image Layer. Google Sheet should be one row of property titles (Name, Strength, Defense, whatever), and then a row-per-item with the values filled in. (Example: <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1UuBvFnNyeHpL7kq8b9J6N420-td9DFZ2GCcsvIdvxjU/edit?usp=sharing)" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1UuBvFnNyeHpL7kq8b9J6N420-td9DFZ2GCcsvIdvxjU/edit?usp=sharing)</a> I have to take care of some chores then I'll be back at the computer and can help you further. If you'd consider joining the Discord (<a href="https://discord.gg/DzKXXy)," rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://discord.gg/DzKXXy),</a> we could even chat directly and screen share. Good luck!
