My logic for this is; if I have introduced the background before, people don't need to see it again. People have a mental image for it and so it's not necessary to reintroduce it for close up shots. I use a mix of colours to subtly hint at the background. Establishing shots don't get the same treatment obviously or shots where the space matters for story or action purposes.
