I felt like a different style today!

I've recently been trying to use up some art supplies that I've been holding on to for years. Most notable has been a stack of old tracing paper that I discovered works pretty well with india ink! So I have been pencil sketching on regular paper and then inking clean lines on tracing paper. It doesn't sound like much, but it allows me to have several attempts at laying down my ink lines, which don't always go down super pretty. It adds a physical layer between the good pencil sketch and final ink lines, which is exactly what animators have been doing for ages and is a fundamental aspect of digital art.

Have you made any discoveries in art recently?

I'm currently working on a series of doorways to other dimensions, just finished one of six. The one I just finished was a stairway to Space! https://www.etsy.com/listing/590877019/doorways-to-other-dimensions-cross It doesn't look hard, but the colors for the stairs especially were SO HARD cause they were really really similar. I got so frustrated at the end b/c I did this on white fabric, and couldn't get my grubby hand marks around the hoop off. I was so frustrated that I just said I GIVE UP!!!! and threw it in the washing machine. It actually came out all cool looking like a frayed fragment of something from the past. I think I'm gonna leave it that way and frame it like it was a map fragment. I was going to try to make them all uniform, but after this insane journey of the first one, I'm going to just let them come out how they come out, and be their unique flawed selves!!

I love cross-stitch Kate! And yes, you have to go freestyle while you're doing it - it makes it so much more exciting and the final product is so much better!

This is such an important thing to continually remind yourself! Have fun with it, make mistakes, people won't necessarily notice what you notice. I love it. What kinds of things do you cross stitch?

Aww, I love hearing about how nicknames started. My nickname in my family is Waz because my dad used to drive across Canada all the time for work and he often crossed this small, muddy river (named Waz-something) that reminded him of me.

I really like the different line weights that the subjects and background details have. I know that's a pretty basic b observation, but it's what stuck out to me. I just got through the most challenging and swear-filled x-stitch of my life as of now, and it made me realize that sometimes following the pattern exactly takes a lot of the fun and satisfaction out of completing a project. Hell, most of the time nobody even notices if it's wonked out, so who cares? Also it kind of makes it more personal? IDK, the point is to have fun creating things, and not everything has to be perfect and that's just as it should be. <3

Tracing is one of the things I like to do best! Very meditative. When my daughter (now 19) was small, she was a very good artist, and I would jokingly accuse her of tracing something rather than drawing it herself. I would call her "Tracey" and it's still a joke between us.
