I really want to try and watch the actual CR livestreams, but I've got friends telling me that even during the pandemic, they couldn't catch up haha So for now, I stick with VM. So good though!

2024-09-10 15:00:58 +0000 UTCSo, I am like you in that I also have not interacted with the original Critical Role campaigns before watching this show- but I do think they do a great job in this first episode of introducing people into this world and to these characters, no matter how much pre-existing knowledge one has of them. There’s so many great moments in this show, I can’t wait to see you get to explore them. From what I’ve read, this show was actually fan funded-? Critical Role fans- lovingly calling themselves “Critters”- are kind of insane. The CR group just wanted to do like, one animated episode just for the fun of it and their Kickstarter campaign got SO much money in just a few days (like, MILLIONS of dollars) that they began to look into the prospects of making an entire series. Then, they were picked up and thus sponsored by Amazon Prime, and the rest is history. I hear they still have full creative control of their story though, so while it’s an adaptation of a campaign it’s one that’s like, done by THEM. All the player characters of Vox Machina are also voiced by their original players, as CR is made up of a bunch of professional VAs already. But yeah wow the fan base for this D&D group is insanely dedicated and it’s wild to me. Last year the whole cast of Critical Role showed up at my local con and probably FIVE THOUSAND PEOPLE showed up from nearby and even all the way across the country JUST to see them, on top of the already stacked attendance numbers for every other celebrity guest that came. The cosplay game in this fan base is insane as well- some of the most intricate and imaginative costumes I’ve ever seen at a con. I can definitely tell that their passion is super inspired by the passion the creators pour into their source material, so genuinely you’re in for a treat. The CR people are nothing if not great storytellers.
