Steven Universe | S4 | Ep 20-24

The season finale of Steven Universe is here! This was a fantastic season for SU. A tremendous amount of character development for Steven and a lot of fleshing out of our side characters. The finale and how it has set up Steven's view has me SUPER excited for the FINAL season!

Enjoy :)

The Good Lars- Your comment about "ahah they probably smoked something while Steven was gone" is now my new headcanon, LOL. Yeah, sometimes you just gotta get a bit high and chill out to some sweet vibes lmao. Yeah oof this one is a sad one, though. Like, Lars made such a huge step here just in showing his cooking to another person beyond Sadie... and yet he couldn't bring himself to step past that final barrier and face the unknown of a new social situation. The guy's just... cripplingly paralyzed by even the mere possibility of judgement. As much as I know this character often frustrates many viewers, I bet there were a lot of us who felt really called out by the insecurities at play in this episode, lol. _ Are You My Dad?- I'm really into the shot at the end of this episode where it's Steven blacking out from his own first-person POV, watching everyone be taken away. I think it's a very effective way to frame the moment- and had me SCREAMING on my first watch, lmao. I kinda agree with you about that one Garnet line while they're trying to draw portraits of the Gem Steven saw seeming a little out of character- it's sooo funny to me, but I can't really envision what's going on in her head when she says it, lol. Also YEAH- I'm with you re: quality, I think this and the next together as a one-package deal is a great ol' romp, but split as two episodes this becomes saddled with doing a lot of pre confrontation set-up. Still, if they didn't split it, the cliffhanger scene I really like with Steven blacking out wouldn't hold as much weight, so I'm kinda split both ways, y'know? _ I Am My Mom Oh to be fourteen years old and turning yourself in as your war criminal mom to the alien homeworld who wants you dead for shattering a diamond. Mc YIKES. Like... buddy?? You good???? You wanna talk about it? He knows exactly what the potential stakes here are- you can see it in his eyes when he turns back and says one last "I love you." For all he's aware he is walking straight towards his death. Messes me right up, oof. Also... the comment about "I hope Lars stays on the ship to repent for what he just did" made me laugh. You'll notice that he never, uh... never jumped with the others at the end, there, huh? :) _ Steven Universe: Future on the main channel sounds fun. I know there's a bunch of folks who would be happy to see another reactor do those public. Now that you've mentioned it, I think my recommendation for SUF as far as pacing goes would be to either do them in pairs or 4 episodes at a time (instead of the batches of 5 you're doing here.) Either of those two methods would align nicely with how they were originally broadcast, and I think would lead towards the best viewing experience when it comes to their pacing.

YASS here we gooo! Lion 4: Alternate Ending- "This is just a bunch of garbage Mom left behind!" Right after this line and before he kicks that bit of trash on the ground in frustration, Steven's expression sharply falls and he goes silent a bit. I can't help but feel that- in this moment- he's briefly considering Himself as yet another piece of Rose's garbage. No real purpose or utility (because he’s looking for a set destiny for himself and can’t seem to find one yet), just *existing* here, and it's so frustrating to him. Oughhh. I hurt inside. _ Doug Out- The really funny thing about Steven's very shitty Italian impression is that his voice actor is fluent in Italian ahahah. I bet that either hurt his soul to record or made him laugh really hard. 100% agree that Doug Maheswaran and Greg would be BFFs if they hung out more. They both have that awkward dad humor on LOCK, it's so good lol. Ahahah I also agree that he probably shouldn't have invited these kids on an actual job, though- like, I get that the kiddos have done dangerous space stuff and that he just wants his daughter to think he's cool instead of doofy, but since it's through his work we're operating on Earth rules here and they shouldn't have gotten involved. You sooo called it on Onion too, ahah! _
