He did the thing. So far this looks like a really selfish move on his part. "I don't have the balls to kill you because I love you and would mourn out the rest of my days... SO WHY DON'T YOU KILL ME INSTEAD?" Unless he expects her to be smart and capable enough to solve it some other way that he couldn't. But he seems to know magic better than she does.
