Rice is very similar to other grain crops where the seed (grain) grows at the top of the plant. Once harvested it leaves just the stem behind which creates problems when the next crop needs to planted. Burning off the crop will clean the paddocks enabling the new crop to be planted into a trash free seedbed. In Australia where machinery is more available, the straw is either baled or the farmer uses no till machinery which means they can plant into existing straw without cultivation.
