It's not that the novels weren't popular in the West, but rather it's simply not published cause of the publisher. There are plenty of people who loved the WN translations as well as the manga. The author was simply unlucky in who picked up his work. That publisher is infamous for not wanting to license overseas.

Well, almost every novel adaptation comes with the issue of skipping context and worldbuilding. When shows do not do that and lean into the slowburn, the consumers of anime tend not to rate it highly. For example, Grimgar's anime tried to feature the novels' slower pace and it never really replicated the source material's success. The Spider anime simply including the human parts already made the audience impatient despite it providing important context for the story. My point is that knowing this is a 12 episode season with another 24 episodes coming planned, you can't judge a character/story as a finished product. It also matters as I've pointed out previously that there were already signs of Makoto's psychopath (he pretends/learns to fit in, so not a sociopath) tendencies.

What sucks about Tsukimichi getting an adaptation this late is that the "overused tropes" people are tired of were generally in works that were made several years after Tsukimichi did in the novel, and since the novel doesn't seem popular in the west it's gonna be judged by comparison to recent works instead of older ones.

I'll agree with the guys though, it didn't seem that major of a thing and they didn't really play into it until he snapped. It the novel it's obvious very early on that he is pretty much a sociopath by default but was taught/worked on getting more in tune with his social environment and his emotions. In the anime it's not seen as a usual side of him more than a sudden outburst like any other anime MC.

The merchant trope is common because it's popular. Any isekai that has an MC using knowledge from their own world to get an unfair advantage in wealth generation that I've read has been very popular. There' s a ton of light novels where it's not only an aside to the main story, but the entire premise. Ascendance of a Bookworm comes to mind, or I Shall Survive Using Potions.

Lithane

Makoto throughout this show has always shown this really cold side of his personality. From what I recall, he did this during his battle against Mio when he's pushed to his limits. Then there's the part where he first learned about Toa or really anytime he gets serious during the Rembrandt arc. That flashback with young Makoto not knowing how to feel about a cat's death really speaks volumes about this MC.

I love that they keep bringing up the language barrier thing. It's not even an issue of learning how to speak/write, but rather feels like the world itself is interfering with Makoto whenever he tries to have dialogue with hyumans. That's what the sound distortion + static are meant to represent. The way Makoto just turned off his auto-translate and the woman's voice reverted back to distorted noise was a chilling reminder of his state of mind. Edit: Mitsurugi doesn't know Japanese, but rather Makoto can only speak to demi-humans. This was mentioned in episode 1.
