My favourite part about Kumo's adventures is that she doesn't get a guide in her "playthrough". She's literally leveling up skills she can't use and no one tells her how to optimise. It's super old school and probably one of the most rare attributes of an isekai. The only other isekai anime even close to this level of difficulty is Grimgar.

2023-09-10 15:05:18 +0000 UTCBasically, if you've ever heard of "Past Life Regression" in the real world, the concept makes sense. It's this idea that under hypnosis you can recall memories from your previous incarnations (note, I'm not pretending it isn't a scam, just explaining the claims). The main difference in reincarnation Isekai is that you remember your past incarnations easily, without hypnosis. Basically, I divide Isekai into two types, Reincarnation Isekai where you are reborn into the new world as an infant, and Summoning Isekai, where some magic (or advanced science) summons you to the new world. Because all the non-spider characters are already in High School it's not necessarily clear here, but I think they were all reborn in the new world as infants, just with perfect memories of their old lives intact. Sort of like Cid Kagenou or Tanya Degurechaff. I was reading an Isekai recently in which the main character as a teenager finds his mind overwhelmed by the complete memories of another person's previous life in our world. It's one of the rare Isekai's where the character doesn't think of himself as that person, but just that he got their memories which are very useful to him. PS: Also, Rot Grubs! The classic D&D monsters!

It has never said as much... ;) keep in mind that there is quite deep lore to this world and things are not always as they seem. The author sometimes likes to mislead you on purpose. So keep a lookout for more subtle clues about what is the real truth. On a rewatch it is amazing how many sneaky things were included that you easily miss on a first viewing 🤣
