It's sort of a self-buff where all Instant Death-type skills cast within a 12 second period is upgraded to bypass all immunities and resistances. Even things that can't die - like the earth or the air - experiences death as a result. This is why the ground turned to sand. Even the air turned poisonous. The Instant Death-type magic that he cast here is Cry of the Banshee, which is an AoE. He also used the metamagic modifier Widen Magic to further increase the area effect.
