Videos for People, Not Advertisers or Algorithms

Let me level with you: I pride myself on being a great writer, entertainer and video editor, but I don't think I'm a great businessman. That's because the business of online video is largely the business of advertising, and man, I hate advertising.

I believe the direction content platforms are going in will harm creators in the long run by incentivising them to "just post more content" and try to get seen by as many eyeballs as possible, instead of encouraging them to produce art they're proud of and to cultivate an audience that truly resonates with their work.

I don't see the people who watch my videos as "units of attention" for me to package and sell to advertisers. I don't see them as "customers-to-be". I see them as real people, with real lives, and perhaps my videos play a small, but not insignificant part of it.

I know I just make silly little videos, but in truth, this is the work I dedicate myself to every day and I'm proud of it. I grew up watching creators on YouTube who helped shape me into who I am, even just through entertainment, and I'm honoured that I can now do the same.
