ep.28 - yeah, my heart hurt. The things Pei Su went through. "Give me liberty or give me death"... Poor Luo Weizhao too - this guy held his friend's dying body shot by his mentor's daughter, and now he has to deal with his suicidal boyfriend in white ep.29 - I did not expect the twist with captain Du and Pei Su AT ALL. Like the way cap. Du was depicted in some scenes made him look sus af. I don't know, maybe I'm just dumb, but the revelation genuinely shook me. So good ep.30 - almost the entirety of the episode Pei Su was literally tortured, but the only thing on my mind was - omg why does he look so good I mean listen, as far as murders go, when the victim is a owner of the establishment that pray and abuse children in all horrific ways imaginable, it's not like, the worst. Also, as much as the Evil Boss of the Evil Org is evil, the fact that during the ambush he's in the first row, guns blazing and not cowering behind his henchmen, unlike Professor who hides behind his facade of rightful justice and hundreds of unsuspected meat-shields blinded by rage and grief. He is a bad guy, but at least he's honest about it. And I kinda respect that. Just a little bit. THE ENDING WE NEEDED AND DESERVED!!!

Vol. 1 of the novel doesn't come out until December🥲 This show is a great adaptation of the novel, considering the limitations of time and censorship. The thing is, censorship doesn't ONLY affect the gay stuff, there's A LOT of non-gay stuff that censors don't agree with too! And especially with this novel, I feel (won't go into details since, you know, spoilers). Can't wait for you to read it and experience the FULL story, in so many ways🤗

And here we are, at the end of Justice in the Dark. Who knew this day would come? Can't wait to read the novel with you, I think you would absolutely love the book. Are you planning to wait until all the books are released, or will you read them as they come out? About Pei Su not killing his father and his trauma, I think Fan Si Yuan absolutely misunderstood PS's trauma here. He was expecting Pei Su to be the one looking into the abyss and didn't think that Pei Su saw himself as the abyss. Meaning that the way Pei Cheng Yu raised him, how he was always telling him that he was a perfect monster, a superior human, led to how PS never thought of himself as the object of his father's abuse, but rather someone like Pei Cheng Yu (a monster). It's not surprising that he made the choice he did at the end. In Fan Si Yuan's theory, a victim would seek revenge on his abuser, but since PS thought about himself as an abuser, not a victim, and he didn't want to be like this, he opted for a different choice. He chose not to be a monster, his father always wanted him to be. P.S. I hope this all makes sense. English is not my first language, and I tried my best to put all my thoughts into the words <3 <3 <3

So to reply to your comments about the book vs show plot, without spoiling. So I think plot wise this is very faithful to the novel, but the book is VERY LONG. Each case is it's own arc with a long investigation which thematically ties in with the overarching themes of good vs evil, victim vs abuser, inheritance and sins of the fathers, etc. But the cases in the show are basically cliff's notes versions of the novel so yeah that's why the pacing feels weird. And yeah there's a lot of romance and relationship stuff that isn't in the show, but honestly they manage to just...cut that stuff while leaving the shape of it there in a pretty effective way, IMO.

The Chief Producer of Justice in The Dark is Yang Xia, who was also one of the main producers for The Untamed. In her filmography, these to dramas (and one of The Untamed movies) are literally the only things she was a producer for. Such a queen. In ep.22, near the end when they were in the forests, Pei Su said "But I don't want to see you go through all the procedure, only for the person [suspect] to disappear." There's another way to interpret this in context, he could be referring to Luo: "But I don't want to see you go through all the procedure, only to be gone/end up ded [referring to Luo's safety]." That's how Luo interpreted it and responded with "What are you saying, can't you wish for better things for your gege?" Obsessed with Luo referring to himself as gege btw..

Ep 21: At the end you were saying you're curious why the novel is called Silent Reading. I actually was looking for something else about the novel and ended up finding a very helpful explanation on Reddit. (This isn't a novel spoiler since you've been watching the show). This is by u/dogshaped: " "Modu" [silent reading] is actually one of the "skills" they teach in school, it basically means to read a passage quietly, without quietly reading aloud or moving your mouth to it (so, the exact opposite of reading aloud). It allows you to read faster. There isn't really a phrase that means the exact same thing in English unfortunately. ... So apparently, the author chosen title in english is "The Light In The Night." [I guess 7 Seas didn't stick with this one, but it's similar to Justice in the Dark] ... In Mandarin, I would say there are 3 "similar" phrases, when it comes to reading a passage, and all 3 appear in this novel. The 3 words/phrases are too prominent in the novel, for it to not be intentional on the author's part. 默读 (Mo Du): Title of the novel. It means literally, to read silently. 朗读 (Lang Du): Title of the first chapter in Books 2/3/4/5. It means to read aloud. 朗诵 (Lang Song): This means to recite. ... The primary difference between this and Lang Du, is that it's being read aloud in front of an audience, almost as a performance, while Lang Du, is more for understanding/for the self. "

Ep 2 translation note on "It seems our hearts are interconnected." He said, "看来咱俩心有灵犀" The word heart 心 does appear. I'm using Google translate so take this with a grain of salt, but 心有灵犀 apparently means telepathy, and the full phrase means, "It seems that we have a tacit understanding." We implicitly understand each other/ we can telepathically communicate?? That one isn't inherently romantic but the scene still shows how LWZ and Pei Su actually resonate on certain things early on.

I'm watching your eps 1-8 rewatch - did anyone give you a translation check on the line "Big Eyed Lan, you can look at hotties all you want back home"? I copied the text from the Chinese subs. The word they translated into hotties is 小白脸, xiao bai lian, which means "pretty boy" or literally "small white face." https://www.quora.com/What-does-%E5%B0%8F%E7%99%BD%E8%84%B8-mean-in-Chinese So, this could have been said in a derogatory manner... In ep 19, after they talked to Zhang YiFan and were taking a stroll, Pei Su said, "not everyone can grow up to be the pride of Xinzhou, right", and Luo responded with, "Where's Han Xiu?" so that's actually not the correct sub haha, he said "寒碜谁呢", which translates more to "who are you teasing/quit teasing"

As a native Chinese speaker, I noticed multiple places where the subtitles of this new source are not accurate or flat out wrong - sounds like machine translated with no human vetting. At some key parts, I’m like, Brittany is gonna scream even more if she knows the more accurate and loyal translation!!! lol. But this version seems to have better video quality and who can argue with seeing PS and LWZ’s beautiful faces more clearly… lmao… hopefully you can rewatch with more accurate subtitles at some point so you are not missing out on the details!!

There's just TOO MANY things I could say about ep 16-17, so I'll mention just a few here: - There's a clock on the wall when LWZ is making the bed, then another one when they cut to them sitting at the table, showing about half an hour has passed - The way PS's left space for a whole entire person next to him in bed - Pei Su, who owns so many cars himself, is just casually driving around in LWZ's car instead now... And also, personally I believe in the theory that the show WASN'T cut/re-edited for censorship reasons after it got cancelled at all, but rather that Youku chose to cut some scenes from the first 8 eps on purpose before handing it over to WOWOW. Because Youku still have those eps on their website, and like this they have "exclusive" scenes that people would have to come back to them to watch... (Eps 1-2 on Youku is free, payment needed for the rest, and there's not a single second cut before ep 3 in the WOWOW version!) 🤷

ep 9. Ugh...I am so dense! On 3rd watch realized the parallel's they drawing between Su Ling Nai and her mother (Su Fei).....with our Pei Su and his father. Does one really follow in the foot steps of one's parents? Honestly, I am really appreciating the complexity of the writing here.

Totally got that weird feeling too! Like what do you mean we're over halfway already?? We haven't even had 10 (new) episodes yet!🙈 This might sound a little strange, considering the subject of it, but I'm SO happy with that scene in ep 13! Was afraid they would censor it out completely, or at least heavily tone it down. But no! It's brutal. They committed to it fully and did it justice - I love that. (Also, everyone was complaining when there would only be 1 ep released that week. But after watching it, I'm sure most would agree it's probably for the best😆 Who can even focus on another ep right after being knocked over by THAT??)

Sneaky blink and you miss it implication from ep 10: before Pei Su entered the room, Luo Weizhao was sleeping on the couch without anything covering him. When PS leaves the room (flashback in the graveyard), there's suddenly a jacket covering LWZ💖

Honestly, SAME. Sure there might have been cuts, and not every scene from the book could be included (it's CHINA, we KNOW they censor all kinds of stuff), and have there ever been a series/movie that even filmed every scene in the script and in it's entirety? We've waited more than 2 years already! From where I'm standing, every single scene we DO get is a gift🙏❤️ Also, we don't even really need to write in the gaps ourselves - we've still got ✨the novel✨!

Haha, the part you caught on about heart being interconnected (good eye!) and wondering if the Chinese original line is less gay… well… Nah…. The idiom “心有灵犀” (Xin You Ling Xi) was used by Luo Weizhou, which refers to when two people’s hearts are telepathically connected and they know what each others are thinking without needing a single word. It came from a Tang dynasty poem by Li Shangyin that reads “身无彩凤双飞翼，心有灵犀一点通,” which means “We can't fly side by side like a pair of phoenixes, Yet our hearts closely linked beat in harmony.” Yeah, you guessed it, it’s a love poem that depicts the sorrow and longing of two lovers who are deeply in love but can’t be together!
