One of my all time favorites!

I’ve loved this movie for sooooooo long

Stephanie Carroll

Love this movie so much. I have watched it so many times and it never gets old. Thank you so much for watching and reacting!

Joe Lancaster

So very occasionally he reminded of Timothy Olyphant, just in certain pauses and head tilts and stuff. Maybe cause they’re both socal boys idk. Josh Duhamel too though, definitely.

Kate

Thank you! I enjoyed watching this reaction with you. I was late to find Shelter just a few years ago, but was wanting a re-watch lately. I think about the end beach scene a lot. 💗

In the commentary they talk about the Big Gay Love Montage and how they were trying to get good moments to fit that it. I love this film so much and calling it the gay surfer movie is such a disservice. I'm glad Cody will get to grow up in a better place now.

Audrey

Josh Duhamel is a great comparison, this actor could srsly be his and Stephen Amell's brother.

I'd forgotten just how genuinely good this film is! I have watched it in like a decade or so and some details had blurred out a bit so I was both exited and apprehensive that it wouldn’t hold up as well as it did. Did not miss the 2000s fashion or the casual homophobia, though… but really I think shelter is much bettter film than many that have been made later. I love it so much! It was the first piece of queer media I ever watched (in a sense that it focused on the queer people instead of them being relegate& to side characters). I’m pretty sure I watched it on YouTube back when yt didn’t really care about what was uploaded there or things like copyright… and it certainly was a formative experience for me. And I’m so glad it was actually as good as I thought it was instead of time and fondness making me think that!

Oh gosh this film. I first watched it when I was 18 and it was so fundamental to me and it hit all over again over a decade later. I grew up being a somewhat parent figure to one of my siblings and this film always got me because of the relationship between Zach and Cody. People can tell you over and over that it shouldn't be your responsibility and you should focus on yourself but for anyone from a complicated situation like this that's just not how it is. You're not babysitting, you're parenting. And you can't walk away- not unless you're 100% sure you're no longer needed. And you might want your own life and all of that but somehow your decisions will still focus around this kid- and this film embraced that and incorporated it. Shaun accepted Cody, he treated him like Zach's kid already, like they were a package deal. And they got their family in the end. It showed that you can find your happiness without being like everybody else. It just always hits me. Also it was just a really well made film back in the era of tracking down a handful of non-tragic gay stories. I think they filmed it in like a week too which is just impressive.

It’s so funny that I was thinking about this film just a few nights ago, and here you are with a reaction. This film meant everything to me in 2007. A quality queer film with any sort of happy ending was almost impossible to find back then. Most films either ended in tragedy or were just utter garbage

Everyone has a gay panic over something at one time or another, right? I did. The first time I kissed a girl I freaked out for a bunch of reasons and then started writing her letters in class because I was having big gay feelings about it going "wtf wtf" the whole time. It was A LOT back then, lol.

Jamie

I love this movie so much because this was the first queer film I watched that felt relatable and had a happy ending. The queer films I was introduced to in the early 2000s were more likely to give me more trauma then anything else so this one always stood out to me and became a favorite ❤️

So funny story - I used to live in San Pedro. Around 2007. How have I never seen this movie before?! No but seriously the fashion and the flip phones took me right back to being 17 haha. All those layers and baggy jeans. What a sweet little film though - I’m super glad it got commissioned 💕 Edit: I don’t surf but I do bodysurf and watching this has definitely heightened my longing for some ocean time.

Kate

Not sure if it's what you're thinking, but Shaun always reminded me of Josh Duhamel. And yes Tori was in Supernatural.

I can't really remember now since it's been a whole ass 20 years, but this was one of if not the very first queer film I watched as a teen. And it was so relatable to me at the time that it left me bitterly disappointed when I began to delve into the other queer films of the day....

WOW! Shelter! This is one of my all time favs. I recommend it to all my peeps who have to find their own "made family'.
