...she really was perfect, huh.

What's so refreshing about The Sandman comics is that it's expansive not only in narrative content, but also in structure. These "side stories" provide a foundation for viewing Dream and his experiences on a grand scale, rather than from a human's limited perspective. I really enjoy the thematic wanderings. Much like how I feel when I have memorable, beautiful, and inexplicably unsettling dreams in my own life. I never would have thought a piece of literature/art could capture these feelings, yet here we are. Also, they did such a fantastic job introducing Death. I remember the feeling when I first read this part of the comics, and realized who she was. They recreated this experience extremely well.

I think, as a longtime fan of the comics, that this episode and episode 11, which both combine two Very Good and Popular issues of Sandman into one ep, are my favorites and probably that of most comics fans. Add the shippiness of Hob and Dream to catch the attention of new fans and yeah, ep 6 wins. Like if you had asked me to name a few memorable issues of the (early) comic I would have named The Sound of Her Wings, A Man for All Seasons (which are both in this ep) and the two from the bonus ep.

This is my favorite episode, for so many reasons. Just one of them, as a designer, I just died for the beautiful whisky glass, and then the liquid turned into Dream in his cage.Poetic cinema.

That....and also that his years powerless in captivity has CHANGED him. He reacts to the world differently.....

So much of the appeal of Sandman as a comic was that, although it does have great twisty plot and epic showdowns, the quiet contemplative issues were as good if not better. Because those are the bits we the fans usually have to invent and imagine for ourselves, but instead of fic we’ve got the canon itself providing chewy character studies and meta and stuff. I’m really impressed by how well the show does interpreting that.

I don't know why but I love this episode the most. Maybe coz it warms my heart.

Alice K.

A beautiful episode, I love that she essentially told Dream to touch grass.

A big theme in the comics and show seems to be Dream learning to care about humanity a bit more, so I think that while it does feel like filler it's part of his development.

AMyosotis

It is a little weird along the lines of not fitting in with the other episodes so far, true - but it does feel very much like episode 3 of Good Omens - showcasing humanity/showing a friendship between two immortals across the centuries etc. Very mid-season filler, but in a good way? If that makes sense?

So it’s only on this watch that I realised, Death fully tricked her brother into making a friend, huh?
