Throughout the 1830s, Professor Enoch Bowen’s exploits as an archaeologist in Asia, Asia-minor and Africa were well-known in New England. Likewise, in 1843, it was with great fanfare that it was announced, “Providence’s own” Professor Bowen had discovered the “tomb of a heretofore unknown pharaoh, called NE-PH-EN-KA”. The tomb—described as being located in a “lost city of pillars”—was apparently located near Kasr Kerun, in the flats beyond, north of the mountains, in the “sandy desert of Lybia.”
