That's right at the transition point as the Air Force is about to be spun off into it's own branch in that November, and so they would have known it was in the works, and the whole service would have been off kilter.

The stuff on Roswell AAB in the publicly released report, as well as some other stuff I've dug up is just weird. It was pretty clear the Air Corps to Air Force transformation was a mess for all involved.

Really! That's super uncommon for an NCO to be a pilot. Although looking at it deeper, it looks like the Army Transportation Corps had NCOs, so yeah, nevermind and ignore me. :)

Yeah, they're real guys (and Roswell AAB had no helicopters at the time).

it might be a little off, but usually a helicopter pilot is a Warrant Officer, not a Staff Sergeant. NCOs are not usually pilots, even in 1947. Since this is July 1947, it's all still US Army, or Army Air Forces, and so he'd be a Flight Officer, or a Warrant Officer Junior Grade, maybe a Chief Warrant Officer, if he was a senior pilot... unless you're pulling his name from history, and in which case I'll STHU. (and now, realizing that the Stinson L-5 Sentinel isn't a helicopter, I'm a bit chagrined.) But that does reinforce the point, pilots were almost never NCOs.
