Flayed Gods Sneak Peek

Howdy patrons,

Here's a behind the scenes look at the progress of the Flayed God models.

This is a quick render right after I finished blocking in the whole model. Usually I try to print once each piece is at least represented with a simple proxy object of the same size and shape. Sometimes I do a little sculpting first, depending on the model.

Here the model has been set up for printing in Chitubox (I use an elegoo mars printer if anyone's curious). The supports look awful! I really don't put a ton of effort into early test prints as they're only used to see what parts of the model need to be scaled up, exaggerated, toned down, moved, etc. I used to do FDM test prints but I've become super comfortable with resin so lately I've just been going DLP right from the start.

Here you can see things starting to come together. This was before the 2nd test print. Obviously things are a lot more filled in. I like to have every piece at least resembling the finished look at this point.

Now the model has been rigged! A LOT of work happens between this step and the last one. The sculpted meshes need to be tweaked and fixed in order to combine and simplify them enough to get them to bind to the pose-able skeleton rig without errors. In this image I'm just goofing around posing it to get a feel for what needs to be fixed with the weight painting (that's what determines how much each bone of the animation rig affects a given area of the 3d model).

Once I'm happy with the weight painting and all the joints deform in a reasonable way, I get to the final pose! After this step a few more small tweaks are usually made to ensure details are visible in the printed model. The image below is right before the last print test.

And here's the posed model after a test print! Excuse the messiness. Since this is just for checking proportionality and the look of the pose I didn't do much cleaning. I decided to enlarge the head and exaggerate the eyes and mouth. Also decided to fix a couple areas on the back and on the lion cloth thing. It's done but you'll have to wait for the official release to see!

Since this month's models are going to share a lot of the base sculpt, here's a look at just the head of the other Flayed God. He'll have a few other unique bits which you'll see soon!

I hope you all enjoy these previews with light shop talk. If there's anything else you'd like me to add to these sneak peeks in the future please let me know in the comments!

Thanks everybody,

See you soon with the finished models.
