Color Or Grayscale comics discussion

So after reading the 6 page short comic what do you think? Both styles obviously come with their pros and cons. Remember I would still be doing 3 pages a week color or not.

Color takes a longer time to do so I cannot have inked lineart like in grayscale, but it compensates with making up for the lack of definition in lineart by color contrasts. Even without inking the process still takes a bit longer but it is up to personal preference if this is worth the extra time.

Grayscale generally takes less time to do but it's more tedious factory work compared to color and if it's a lot of work like on skintones I'd much rather just do it in color for same amount of work. Backgrounds also suck in grayscale unless you spend a monstrous amount of time on them while in color you can do impressive results quickly. The obvious advantage this style has is the inked linework doing most of the work. If you like manga style you might prefer this.

Leave your thoughts below on what you would prefer my comics looked like going forward. Every page wednesday friday and sunday. Also do not consider how this would affect me I just want to hear your personal preference.

Comments

I like that backgrounds are more detailed in colorful version

Argus

I would argue a mix of both is best. I think color is great for introducing new characters (since now you have a better idea of what they look like) and it could be a great way to emphasize dramatic moments. I would just vary it up in an intentional way -- just like how orchestral music has very purposeful louder and quieter moments.

Huckleberry Finn

I’d vote for finishing One Serving Choice in greyscale, then switch to color for the next longform comic

yuejingling

It's just going to be more work so I want to be sure it's going to be appreciated. I don't want to work extra hours just to hear people liked the easier thing better. But I'm glad to hear you'd like it regardless.

Kipteitei

Reading your comments Kip, it sounds like you are looking for approval to move to the creative process you desire. You'll also output the same number of pages a week, which would be the other concern most folks have. I enjoy both personally, so I choose color. I'd love to see you excited about this change and see what you come up with in your style via color over time.

Sae777

I vote for alternating for what suits the page best

sad hammerhead

I feel like you should do what you are more passionate in doing. If you are throughly passionate in working on something it'll show in the work and be better overall. Although I personally like gray scale I will continue with my patronage regardless of if you want to change your style.

Alex Perez

After some great pondering I've decided that while I can't necessarily pick one or the other because of how good they both are I've come to the conclusion that a change of pace can do wonders for growth and learning so I'll support coloring in the pages for this reason. In my pondering I saw two things with the pros and cons of grayscale and color and to boil it down it comes to would you rather look at the definition of a statue or in this case grayscale or look at the liveliness of a painting that being in color. So kip I hope the change of pace with coloring in the pages for osc will bring a new angle for later drawings and stories godspeed kip.

Rugal1998

I think the color looks great

lildaniel100

I was skeptical, but I’m sold. Really like how these new pages came out.

Some Aigis

I think the greyscale is really nice, I think color is great and all, but I think its best to save colored pages for important ones here and there in the comic. Just my 2 cents.

paulphil

Color breathes so much life into a comic, I love it way more

Traegerthorn

Yah looking back at the scenery for No Lunch Beach you can't get that with gray scale pages personally these colored backgrounds absolutely make it

Nenohi Dayo

having to wait on each new page to soak in the details is defs I feel the much more enjoyable reading experience for me personally, I think it defs justify the wait for new pages if something like having more detailed backgrounds to compliment the chubs 👍

Nenohi Dayo

I really like the grayscale, and it's fun to have the chance for fan colours, but I love the skin tones you paint too much to pass up.

Phat94

I meant cel shading, without blending shadows.

Shelby

I think the color really helps make your character designs shine. For instance I often forget their hair colors until I see them in color

ConcreteSeconds

Imho, the main advantage of grayscale is that it's easier on the artist. Given that, if you prefer color, it sounds like color is the clear winner.

Kestrel

As it is color obviously takes longer but I'm fairly certain that I'm able to streamline the process and make it faster like I was able to do with inking. Doing both is terrible for me because I cannot use the same method on all the pages so I just end up taking more time on both versions.

Kipteitei

I hope so, but if I start doing colored pages from now on it's just a matter of getting the first 200 pages colored later.

Kipteitei

Good, that's what I wanted to hear, thanks

Kipteitei

Personally, I like the grayscale with color for panels of great emphasis or importance. AKA fatty action.

Iceberg

I like the color because it helps me avoid misinterpreting the character's looks (hair color, skin tone, eye color, etc.)

RealJordanM

If doing color pages doesn't take you more time, I'd rather have color pages every time.

matthieu carrico

No I don't think you understand what I mean. If I go full color I can work on the whole page and it's a rewarding process because I get to control the whole picture like a painting. If I only do "without shadows" as in just the flat colors it's essentially the same as filling things with greyscale and it will just look worse than both versions.

Kipteitei

I don't, hence I made this poll

Kipteitei

I didn't say anywhere that the color would mean less pages

Kipteitei

I’m honestly torn. I think I really like both equally.

Maxmillion

I kinda agree with most of the comments here so far. Leave Grayscale on most pages, and save color for special pages (either if it’s a page you consider important for the story, or you personally like how it turned out and would like to see in color).

Mirameika

Personally I find the color distracting and not as enjoyable. but you do what you feel is best it is your art not ours.

Angelbane

I voted gray scale because I guess I'm used to manga. I'm used to the comics being grey and when a special page comes out that's in color that's a nice treat

Ien Ryan

Very well said.

Schattenjäger

I prefer to have a more developed story, a faster publication and why not color pages when necessary (your "full night nanny" comic was really good).

matthieu carrico

Sounds like you already know what you wanna do. You can always switch back and forth on different comics

Geb Baserr

You wouldn't have to wait longer, three pages a week like normal. But if you prefer grayscale for aesthetic reasons thats fine

Kipteitei

It will be strange to have everything be in color so suddenly. Will this comic get all color pages eventually like no lunch break?

Shapeshifter10

I understand if it's frustrating as an artist, but a lot of readers would appreciate these

Shelby

I really think the coloring looks great! Just from a consumer perspective, it feels like a high quality product. So I voted color

ZzzQuil

I prefer grayscale. It leaves room for your own imagination. Having to wait longer for each page just to have it in colour doesn’t seem worth it to me.

Glockwise

Either or is fine personally. I think you should go with which ever is time efficient for you specifically. The only compromise I can see if you want both is make pages in black/white/greyscale and on specific pages go for color if you really want something to look amazing or stand out. You're likely to discover how to do color pages in a fast way eventually but if time is what you're after then figure out how long they both take to do (obviously this can vary depending on the page) and go from there. See what details can be trimmed or made easier to do to save time if possible. Ultimately, I leave it to you. Both look great as I'm interested in what you draw/create with your comics and solo pics. Just do what works best for you without it making you feel like you're not giving it your all.

Viro Veteruscy

If I have to pick one, I would say colour. That being said, I'll continue to read no matter what you choose.

Bragdir

After thinking about it for a bit, I think I prefer color. Greyscale has a somewhat classy and refined look, but it does kinda get a bit samey and monotonous after a while, where as your coloring really helps the comic pages “come alive” if that makes sense

BigFaunaFan

Well if you hate it, hardly going to vote for it. Reckon this might be the next step in the visual evolution of your comics anyway, but you've gotten extremely good at this either way.

Scryer

Well the point of this poll is to get your preference. I don't want to do the extra work required for color if it's not what people want.

Kipteitei

Grayscale*

Gal_IV

I don't really mind doing either but I just want to know that if I'm working extra hard on something that it will be appreciated, otherwise it's kind of a waste.

Kipteitei

That's basically the same as doing grayscale pages, it's tedious machine work and doesn't really have any advantage of the properly painted pages. If I do color it has to matter.

Kipteitei

I think there should be a third option to do what you think is best. As is, I just can't bring myself to actually vote. Had you not mentioned how much you hate doing greyscale, I'd have gone with that since I prefer the frequent updates and crisp detail. However, I'd rather not be a contributing factor that forces you to do what you don't like, so the most I can do is leave my opinion on the matter.

Oxdarock

Honestly I prefer both

Soul

I feel a little bad for saying this, it seems like you are excited about color and want to explore that and as a reader I’m definitely on board for whatever is motivating you

Zig

Your output is insane, if you want to streamline the process, why not do colors without blending the shadows?

Shelby

I figured as much. In that case I guess we'll see what the poll has in store.

Mystic Panda

At the end of the day if there's a way you prefer to work and feel more satisfied, I think that's the most important thing. I'll be just as interested to read either way. But you want to know what we think. My gut check says grayscale, I think it's just really effective for comic storytelling. The expressions of the characters are very clear and bold, and it's more natural to accept simplifications of backgrounds and less narratively-important elements. I also like the higher contrast value range (more dark and light, fewer in-between tones) that OSC has developed towards. It looks clear and bright. With the color, what stands out more is the impressive lighting and roundness of the bodies, which is nice to look at but to me doesn't need quite that much emphasis panel-to-panel. Feels maybe a little out of balance with overall storytelling needs. Btw I didn't think at all about the lack of inking in the color, the contours look nice. The final sunset panel was really cool. I agree with those saying color could be good for special pages now and then. Is that's feasible, I get that might be way more difficult production-wise… Wonder if there's some way to make grayscale less horrible for you? I wasn't sure from your post exactly what's so bad about the process.

Zig

It's up to you good sir just do what you feel you are are more comfortable with we'll still read it and like it either way.

Commissar Eisenhart

I personally prefer grayscale but your comfort is important here too, even from a practical standpoint. If you burn out then nobody's happy.

UnholySoftie

You're doing a really great work on both grayscale and color, but I think I still prefer color 😇

Kei

It's more work doing a mix of things. If I have to have different methods for different pages I cannot do them in batches and it slows down the process significantly.

Kipteitei

Huh I didnt know that. Thanks for explaining it

chriscrafte

Alternating between them destroys the assembly line method of working on pages. It takes more time to do only certain pages in color than to do all of them in color.

Kipteitei

I really enjoy color, I think it makes the bellies look a lot better

Hugoat

Honestly I prefer the grayscale style mainly because of nostalgia. Having been reading your comics for years now it's almost comforting. However you do a wonderful job in color and you said yourself that you hate grayscale. So maybe to a mix of both? I've read some of the other comments and I think. A good mix of both styles would probably be your best bet

Mystic Panda

It really is hard to say, I think both look amazing I enjoy grayscale art as well as full color art and I think your very good at both. I voted color though so Cx

Justaddwater64

I will admit to liking the grayscale and the way details are shown there. But since you hate it so, I will still support you if you wish to do color panels. I think most of your patrons will feel the same.

JD

I kinda wish there was a 3rd option. That alternating could be an option when you think it would work best. You compared black and white to manga but I think you could do the thing in manga where special panels are in color.

chriscrafte

I think grayscale could still work for certain pages and painted would be more suitable for pages that have more skin showing than usual

PTDLSD

In the end I can't argue with that, motivation is indeed the most important thing in doing/drawing a story.

Rugal1998

Yeah it'll make those scenes pop more and well accomplish the goal of being a hallmark page to be memorable.

Rugal1998

Make the style that you prefer, it's most important for motivation to doing that you like.

Chubbyornotchubby

I'd rather have the gray for defintion, defintion can make or break certain scenes if you ask me

Rugal1998

I'm of the personal opinion that you could save colour pages for special or milestone pages, and keep to the inked grayscale for more regular pages.

Rhys Lawson

Thought I'd never say this but I personally prefer the greyscale
