They’ve been building up the Wesley’s backstory since season 1 with all the hints here and there of how abusive his father has been since growing up. Started with that episode with the kid was possessed by a demon and telling Wesley how he was never good enough for Daddy, locked up beneath the stairs….Then we see in season 2 with the telekinetic girl Wesley figured out that she was abused by her father cause he could in a way relate to that trauma. Later in season 2 he calls his father before leaving to Pylea and he tells him that he’s the new boss but all we see from that phone call is that his father is not impressed and just keeps dredging up Wesley’s failures. Then in season 3 when Fred’s parents came Wesley started mumbling about how Fred’s parents were good because they didn’t berate her and such, before he catches himself and stops. So yes all those tidbits about his relationship with his a father come to a head here and we clearly see how the mere presence of his father brings back the bumbling, unsure, less confident Wesley of before.
