If you're on social media, you're more than likely going to come across at least one video or post, talking about foods that you should never buy or eat because it has X, Y, and Z on the ingredients label. I'm sure you have even heard people say things like "never eat what you can't pronounce". That one has always been funny to me considering we all come from different walks of life, languages, education background, etc. I guess no more Worcestershire sauce for me!
As a Registered Dietitian, this is something I try to explain to people on a daily basis. Most of these accounts that promote this fear among food are simply not educated on the topic, or they are flat out trying to scare you into buying something from them.
The fact of the matter is, all food ingredients are fine in moderation. Too much of anything can be a bad thing. And anybody can point out an ingredient that is in a food that is also found in a household cleaner. Just because your lemon scented pledge smells like lemons, does not mean that lemons are dangerous. Think about that.
With that being said, Nani and I thought it would be a good idea to create a nice little educational infographic that talks about different ingredients and additives that are found in foods. Some of these big words may sound scary, but hopefully this will put some of those fears to rest.
