I had to get a holiday-themed piece in. Every other artist was doing it: the damsel wrapped in red ribbons, a tree in the background, and presents on the floor. So overdone, but I thought I could get a cool rendition in. The completed version is above and all my patron tiers can enjoy it. I'll also post this to my DeviantArt page in a day or two. (Note: right click and "Open Image In New Tab" to see full size).
Around the same time I began work on this, Clip Studio Paint (my drawing software) came out with a new feature called Timelapse! It records all your brush strokes and lets you export it all into a movie. I've always wanted to get a recording of my art process from start to finish. It offers some more transparency into how I actually get a piece of art done so fast.
Check out the timelapse video to see how this Sailor Moon piece was completed. (Note: I know it's an age restricted video. You can watch the video on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjGyxvzIxY8 )
You'll see the Daz3D models I use to form the foundation of the image. My art relies on a ton of 3D modeling to get everything just right. I'll probably spend an hour or two just figuring out the composition of all the figures.
Line art is the next important step. Looks easy, but I assure you a lot of thought goes into this part.
With line art done I can begin coloring. This is where some knowledge of light, color, and form help to make the final painting look believable. I've especially started caring about how lighting will work in the scene, and it factors into my initial composition. You'll notice in my timelapse that I start the shading process in the background first! That helps me establish the overall mood of the scene, which will decide how the main characters get shaded.
Let me know in the comments what you all think. Happy Holidays and thanks for your support!
