Fortunato

I'm going to be starting a new D&D campaign next month and decided on a lighthearted character. Meet Fortunato!

Here's the full skinny I provided to my DM. I thought about a more cartoony Peter Rabbit sort of look (see the sketches) but, my wife talked me out of it. I also thought about him being a cleric of El-Ahrairah but, then I thought that El-Ahrairah was a trickster himself so a trickster rogue came out.

I'm also going to make some buckteeth to get the voice just right! The little figure is going to take the place of a minifig for the times we have grid-based combat. I'll print him out and turn him into a little standee.

I'll offer to do ones for the rest of the party.

Name: Fortunato

Race: Harengon

Class: Rogue

Height: 4’10”

I. Backstory

A ‘spare’ child of a large harengon family from the Feywild, Fortunato was given to a gnome couple who was childless. This was in return for the couple’s help in returning a lost harengon back to the Feywild. Named Flimpt Gittlekrish by the couple, he grew up well-loved and cared-for by his adopted parents. They were part of an itinerant band of artificers. Not being adept at those skills, he did prove a good entertainer and barker, bringing in customers. His sunny demeanor granted him the nickname of Fairweather Jack.

His main skill, however, was… acquisition of items the band needed. He never stole enough to harm the victim, rarely even stealing enough to miss. Over time, he developed a code of honor to never steal to harm the victim and only steal from those who harm others. On leaving the band, he re-invented himself as a gentle-being thief for fun and personal profit. He has sometimes hired himself out as a tester of security measures of certain estates and businesses.

II. Personality

He considers himself, as a descendent of a prey animal, to be the protector of those who are hunted. Provided they aren’t hunters of a kind themselves. While he keeps himself well-appointed, he has a free hand whenever he is flush and will never pass a beggar without dropping a few coins and is quick to forget loans.

He has a quirky sense of humor that is rarely dark but, can sometimes be annoying. He will never, ever punch down with any jokes though he will sometimes try to deflate egos (even his own, substantial one) with a joke, hoax or minor humiliation. He will attempt to steal items just to ‘keep my paw in’ but, will always immediately return them, sometimes without the ‘victim’ knowing; unless the reveal would be funny.

He has a strong sense of family and, though he comes across as an accomplished loner, prefers to be in the company of friends and will always stand by those who stand by him. He will never reveal his true name to any but the absolute closest companions. His nickname might come out from someone else but, not himself.

III. Appearance

Brown harengon male. 4’10”. Lean but, with muscular legs. His left ear tends to flop over if he’s relaxed or drunk.

IV. Dress and Accoutrement

In combat or on campaign, wears studded leather armor with silver fittings. When about town, wears a bloused white shirt under a red waistcoat embroidered with golden running rabbits. Blue knee britches with silver buttons held up by a wide, black leather belt with silver-plated buckle. A rapier in a half-scabbard hangs on his left hip and a medium-sized leather pouch with a silver clasp is on his right (this is where he keeps his coin purse and his clockwork ‘hourglass’ made by his adopted mother)

V. Weapons and Equipment

Rapier (proficient)
Light Crossbow (proficient)
Dagger|Thieves Tools (proficient)
Small backpack. Black leather with silver fittings.
Clockwork ‘hourglass’ a small clockwork device (about the size of a ping-pong ball. Around the equator is a gold band. When two indentations on either side are pressed together, it begins to buzz and the gold band begins to be overtaken by bronze. When the bronze covers the gold entirely, the mechanism re-sets with an audible click and the bronze disappears. The process takes 30 seconds.
Small brown glass eye.

VI. Bonuses

Sneak Attack

Once per turn, you can deal an extra 1d6 damage to one creature you hit with an Attack if you have advantage on the Attack roll. The Attack must use a Finesse or a ranged weapon.

Lucky Footwork.

When you fail a Dexterity saving throw, you can use your reaction to roll a d4 and add it to the save, potentially turning the failure into a success. You can't use this reaction if you're prone or your speed is 0.

Rabbit Hop.

As a bonus action, you can jump a number of feet equal to five times your proficiency bonus, without provoking opportunity attacks. You can use this trait only if your speed is greater than 0. You can use it a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
