The Boy in the Cupboard

In what some have called the worst case of child abuse in Los Angeles County history, 8-year-old Gabriel Fernandez suffered prolonged torture at the very hands of those entrusted to protect him.  Early reports alleged his death was accidental.  But the investigation would quickly reveal a much darker, more evil series of events that would ultimately shake the cracked foundation of the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services to its core.  A BB gun, a belt, and a small cupboard were just the beginning of Gabriel’s proverbial house of horrors.

I agree completely Raina, and though difficult I think it important to share these stories in hope of encouraging critical reflection and change in the systems that can intervene in these types of horrific cases. I actually only glossed over some of the harsher details because I didnt want the listener to lose sight of the missed opportunities along the way that led to Gabriel's untimely death. What a tragic case.

God, this case killed me. I appreciate the warning. I was a victim of child abuse and I went on to work directly in the field both professionally, and with my business on the side. I've worked with a lot of kids who have had abuse experiences. I don't understand how parents can be so evil, and have found that they're all narcissistic or psychopathic. My heart breaks for Gabriel but I think it's important we HEAR the stories like this, even though they're hard. Because these horrors happen and no one knows. But once we know we can help make change.
