Super late to be responding to this, but I'm rarely online anymore. My question for you - Why can't it be both? I think it is. Plus, also to work The Fear into the USA. All chaos and fear = control measures. Hope that makes sense, too tired to elaborate.

It's a way to leverage power in the middle east and force players in that sphere to depend on the US. The US starts wars in the middle east not because they 'want' their oil. It's because they want to manipulate other players in that region who supply oil, and more importantly, ensure they remain opposed to potential allies they might make trade agreements or strategic alliances with. A peaceful middle east that cooperates and works towards their own self interest is a nightmare scenario for the US. That's why Israel is important to them, and that's why they invaded Iraq. Because they want the region to remain unstable.
