Who has older/senior dogs?

Our 3 dogs are all seniors now - Alpha Centauri and Indiana are 12 and Supernova is 13 years old. Senior dogs are so awesome, and they can certainly have their own quirks and challenges! Who else has older dogs? Is anyone struggling with senior dog-specific issues?

Yes! My sweet Dyana is getting 12 years old. And I see her resting, kinda laying lousy on the room and that too one cornered. She was having some bone issue, so i got the vet and he gave her a calcium injection (told me so). She seems better now but still these days back to one corner. Also, I am feeling sad and a bit guilty that I couldn't train her well during my boarding school days. Now a resting aside thing being one, i am really wanting to start brushing her teeth. The gums, tooth don't seem so much in a good position. Her breath is strong and bad odoured. I try to even give a spray to her and she's scared about it. I tried to use the dental solution and put it in the recommended amnount but that's not showing much effect. Been 6-7 months using the solution but so is the effect as i mentioned. How do I train Dyana to start atleast getting a bit okay to see and try licking the toothbrush? I have tried taking her to walks, if not regular then periodic but after she's back, back to that one corner. It'll be very helpful if you suggest sth.

Hi Zak, I just joined yesterday and the reason I joined was because I have (had, one passed) Labrador litter mates. Grace passed away in November at the age of 14. Bud is now 15, going to be sweet 16 in August. I had the 2 pups since they were 8 weeks old, and they had been inseparable for over 14 years. Recently friends of ours rescued some mix breed puppies that were 8 weeks old (pit/sharpei). Bud has been a bit withdrawn towards dogs since losing his sister and his patience towards young dogs seemed to be nonexistent until meeting this little girl (can’t say as I blame him). When he met this little 8 week old pup, he really took to her. Thinking it would wear off, I took her for a long weekend. We’ve now had her 2 weeks, she's now 10 weeks old and where you see him, she’s not far behind. He definitely has a new spring in his step, and is back to enjoying a couple rounds of fetch and even will ride in the car again. My problem is he’s becoming very protective of her. We live out in the country with no one around but do have frequent visitors- one being my 8 year old nephew. Over the last week, when anyone comes by with a dog, or if my nephew is there Bud has started to raise his hair, or show his teeth – like “back off from my sister”. Last night I was working with the pup on not jumping, and no biting he kept placing himself in between us appearing as tho he’s telling me to “leave her alone”. This was the very last reaction I could ever imagine from him. What’s the best way to address this? Also, he seems to almost be overly patient with her. She jumps into his face and nips- I’m told “he will put her in her place” they need to figure it out. Is that the case all the time? Or when do we intervene? Thanks for your help!
