Of what I can recall the series never have any drift races; if they drift or not does not matter as it is first to the goal (unless specified otherwise) who wins. Regarding Ryosuke and the thing he said about the exhaust - he did say, in the same sentence, that he could tell by the exhaust and its power on the straightaways (I don't know if this is realistic or not).
