The Hermit Drake has the habit to seek out colorful shells – the more striking the better – for shelter and protection. The shell, however, serves another important purpose: The Hermit Drake uses it as a mobile hoard for its treasures. Those “treasures” usually only consist of small pebbles, which sometimes are just slightly shinier or more colorful than ordinary ones.
