Book Two Snippet: An emotional scene for J. Corvin!
It has been a while since our last Extended Progress Update, partially because I moved it for my schedule and then you'll notice today it's a smidgen later than our usual time! 💐 That's because I was enthusiastically wrapping up a section yesterday to include mention of it. :D
As I had hoped, the Corvin family dinner was completed within the the time frame I last shared, totaling about 142k words. The chapter isn't finished yet as you'll learn!
Towards the end of the dinner, there's a choice-dependent A/B scene for those of you with this relationship dynamic triggered. I broadened the choice set for this to make it more tailored to you. There has been a potential development that your MC can react to in about 10 or more different ways, including how comfy/reticent/excited B is to tell you what went on.
The variation for that scene took time to capture a variety of reactions/exchanges! I believe you will have fun with it. I included a couple outlandish options for a smile/laugh too.
Aside from coding the dinner, which took a while because we've already gone into how R. Verner's invite is optional and the sheer scope of everything involved, I've been writing to bring this massive chapter to a close. As of now, it's the longest in Book Two! 💚 (Although I feel Chapter 10 or 11 might be like: 'Hold my beer' and be longer, but that's okay! I've got two hands, except beer isn't really for me so: 🧃🧃.) Your Returning Visitor returns to the B&B to learn that S. Dorran has made a connection about something afoot in town, although it's very possible you as the reader have an inkling as well at this point! There is also a phone call for R-mancers to share a moment with their beloved in addition to potentially visiting S. Dorran's room, if you're close enough to them. I loved writing out their room description; naturally, S is a Dorran, so we know their room is going to be one-of-a-kind and so cool! They were given total creative freedom from their mom with its design theme. (Perhaps your MC might learn something heartachingly caring while within the space.) I enjoyed this section!
See? My emojis in the second bullet make more sense now. The cupcake is an obscure reference to a choice-dependent 'outing' in the next chapter most of you will go on!
(In most cases, your RO(s) will accompany you (unless you let down/let go of R. Verner, solo or poly. 🙃) I wouldn't call it an 'excursion', but it's a way to sate your curiosity!)
Anyway, that's in the future! Once this publishes, I'll be working on coding what I've written thus far to not let it stack up too much. After that, my undivided attention will be on some potential MC character development choices that dovetail into an intense nightmare. It's the last part of this chapter (unless I broaden anything else, lol.) This means it should hopefully be finished by the end of this month, so yay! 😊
Writing and coding aside, we do have more content on the horizon for you to delight in as we get through July. As I said in the Content Schedule, I hope you're staying cool/hydrated if it's hot where you live. 'Heatwave Wholesomeness' is a writing I'm looking forward to because it has pool shenanigans and cuteness that I'd personally covet right now (also J and R. >.> I could say that about all of my ROs; I'm understandably a wee bit biased. 😉) Speaking of hot* stuff, I'll likely share C's inspo next month rather than doing a poll about who's next.
(*Also, yes, 'hot' because they're objectively attractive or because some of you would like to fling them into the sun. Either one works. Maybe both at the same time for a select few.)

Admittedly, I've not been keeping up with teasers and trailers as much as I should be, but the fact that something actually seems to be happening this year is awesome! (I've heard how the development side has been very taxing, almost like a moving goal post.) Not sure what DA 4 is even about since I've been so lost in TFS and then minimally gaming. I'm eager to see this chapter completed, though I know how nightmares tend to make me want to add more and more nuance and eeriness with call-backs. I'll be working on it soon. :D I'm pleased that the C inspo mention in the update post is invoking such a reaction! I also did smile at what you said about C going tits out in many of the variations, if not generally dressing in a way that shows off their physique/body. 🥵 (There is a variation in Chapter 1 with Charles where a romanced R seems a bit more bothered by C's lack of shirt while in the MC's presence, hmm.) R tends to be more elegant about it than C, but they've both got it, so they'll flaunt it at times. I love the contrast between Elena and Zarina--both in personality and when it comes to the J angst and fluff. I'm sure Zarina's scene with J will impact your heart in a different way (twisting it) than Elena's will (melting it). Still, I love both versions! 2024-07-12 20:55:33 +0000 UTCThanks again for the explanation! 🥰 I’m glad that wasn’t what you meant with C and R (I keep wanting to call them RC because of the soda). Since you were talking about C (and whether MC is charitable about C or not) when you mentioned that about R, I assumed the two were related—i.e., “trying” with R included putting up with C. I did find it odd, since R forced C to shut up for the MC’s benefit when they stopped at TTP, but figured it was a bloodline thing. Good to know I was interpreting that comment incorrectly! I did go back and read the different choices and responses again about Charlene’s presence. And yes, we’ll have to agree to disagree on that. I agree R stresses how insignificant C is, and it was an annoying wake-up call, but it’s not clear just how long C was in their bedroom drinking with them. Two mimosas don’t take long to whip up, but unless C is guzzling them, she could’ve been there for quite a while. R never says one way or the other, just that they overslept and C awakened them for missing the run, then had two mimosas. So it’s really left up to the MC’s imagination just how long C had been there. I think Naia did the math of R not answering the walkie talkie, C already being there when she and Beckett got there, and R’s state of undress… and came to a conclusion. But as long as she’s not expected to bow down to C, everything else on R’s solo run is manageable for Naia. She’ll put her walls up stronger than before, but that won’t stop her from supporting Reese. In every run, she stepped up to support R after the convo with his mother (and I find the interactions between Mrs. V and the MC very interesting, especially when Mrs. V is minimally warming up to the MC), and will always support him. She’s just becoming more closed off with her own stuff (like those friends/family who always want to help you with your problems, but wouldn’t ask *you* for help even if they were drowning and you owned the only lifebuoy in the world), which is understandable, given her abandonment issues. Plus, as you pointed out, MC is a “returning” visitor, which makes them basically an outsider, whereas R and C have that connection of knowing each other forever, spending every morning together for their run, and both being in bloodline families. I was surprised she tried to contact him on the walkie talkie at all, really. I blame it on how awesome and sweet the excursion with him was in chapter 2. 😉 But she’ll pull back from that and adjust accordingly, refusing to reach out to him when she needs support. There’s a reason she’s a security expert—she excels at keeping people out of places she doesn’t want them to be. As you said, though, Alek is a ray of sunshine. I think that’s why she would have no trouble reaching out to him. His sunny optimism is like the antithesis of her morbid pessimism, a balm for her, really. And yes, you and I know S is compassionate and wouldn’t automatically side with R, but Naia doesn’t know that. She sees they have a connection, and when R didn’t pick up on the walkie talkie, S quickly made excuses for it (her view of it), so she would never mention her worries about R to S, because she’d expect him to defend R. She’s an interesting one to play with her emotionally constipated responses, kind of the opposite of Aizhan, who is like a bull in a china shop, snarking at everyone she passes and blurting out whatever passes through her mind, no matter how inappropriate, lol. Oof, sorry for the babbling again! I just get excited talking about all of these characters (and my Silas-mancer is another emotionally constipated sort, but Silas makes it harder for her to remain that way!).

My enjoyment and getting to tease parts of it with you while writing helped to keep my motivation and energy levels up. I'm also eager for you to discover the conseq--Josh did what with his necklace?! No, no I'm kidding. 👁️👁️I remembered this while writing; specifically, the JR version, because of something R says that earns a sharp look from J. (It won't go the way you think!) As for the cookies, given how Jam tends to have a negative dynamic with A, it was actually nice of her to share them with everyone. Still, this is accounted for too, not quite as bad as outright trashing them. 🍊 (Sidenote: You mentioned Buffy months ago, +5 Aelsa and +5 B approval. There are two references in Book Two now, one is easy to miss and the other will likely remain common for everyone. The writing is still fresh though.) Yes, S is going to be connecting all of the dots, possibly with the help of your MCs too! 📚 That's a mood. S's 'let down' scene was so very S to be /compassionate/ about the situation yet secure enough in what both they and the MC deserve. I'm glad you enjoyed it! Also, that you'll never break up with them again. I'm living for how readers are trying the 'let down' scenes and then hard swerving away from them or finding the one that vibes the most with their MC (read as: hurts the least) and goes with that one. I kind of view S's as that given their calm, etc. It will depend on the MC's personality and bonds, of course! I like them all for different reasons. :D The anticipation mounts for C's face that could end up on a dart board or lovingly tucked beneath a pillow. (Most likely the dart board though!) Your willpower not to read the sneak peek impresses me. I'm often tempted to give out multiple ones, or at least have multiple contenders before whittling it down to one. 💚 (Oh, so that means it'll be a non-canon run or curiosity run? Love that. J does behave differently during it.)

Phoebe will get more time with her Bee, for sure. (I added a scene on the ride back to the B&B for those who have kissed B at this point; Phoebe is in this group, iirc. I can't wait for her to experience it; it'll show a different side of her sweet Honeybee.) Also, she is valid! Still, I'm excited for you to discover the A/B scenes via Beckett, if you're comfortable, it can add fun exchanges for the MC. ✨ It's great that Lucy is triggering this bonus crush while romancing J for even more nuance! I got the sense that Naia would like to turn to Mal for comfort, although her heart seems to be with R at the moment. Regardless, there will not be an 'almost affair' or a soft start for Mal's route in the second book because it undermines their character. Overall, I'm confident in the found family vibe that can be fostered in TFS, so I'm happy to see that Naia is considering her options about whom to confide in. Alek has a way of seeing the bright side, which could be great! While R and S do have a bond, S's compassion and character overall wouldn't make them automatically side with R or blow off the MC. I see how Naia's insecurity is negatively influencing her reaching out. Another read might help to quell some of your and Naia's worries? What you said about assuming the worst of C makes the most sense to me though. Understandably so with your passion for R! As for the drinks, only C had a mimosa and who knows who whipped it up? Mimosas aren't that complex. 🍾 It doesn't imply they've been drinking together for hours, or even at all. R says they overslept in most of the scenes and that C was an 'unasked for wake-up call'; they just woke up. That's why the tea party isn't fully prepared in addition to how they're less put together; all of this is in the text. There were not hours spent between C and R to feed Naia's insecurity beyond the general vibe she might get from C's comments and bloodline standing in Fernweh plus her abandonment issues. (I would actually be impressed by C if they instantly dropped everything and came over after R missed their run.) We're going to have to agree to disagree on your interpretation of the choices. (I wish Naia could bring herself to admit her insecurity because that choice is more fitting, yet I understand you won't select that one for her for character reasons.) In the accusation choice, the MC questions R. Verner, a Verner. They do become more intense, if not incensed (possibly hurt?), but their reply makes it clear that C wasn't invited over and they were not sleeping together. To reduce it to R being 'pissed' is a discredit to the emotions they show. R even says the MC is vastly preferred and not to waste any more time speaking of Char. It's a dismissal of C's presence, plain and simple. In the gate code choice, again, 'it was nothing but an annoying wake-up call'. R does use more humor here, including mentioning they would rather see the MC in their room. What's interesting is that R even suggests letting the MC have access to the mansion with their own special code. This is early on in the relationship and voiced in a sweet manner; basically, the 'exchanging keys' trope. Again, preference for the MC and a dismissal of C is evident. The fact remains: C was at the Verner mansion for a brief time, most likely for a laugh at R's expense as we've seen. This access might make some MCs uneasy; however, R's behavior throughout the tea party and even in the alcove scenes should reassure most MCs. You have to understand that R has known C longer and there are bloodline ties at play. This isn't a preference or a slight against the /Returning/ Visitor; none of R's scenes with C has alluded to that. As I said before: you're right. I think your negative view of C is influencing things, but I do hope that with time, Naia will let R continue to prove their softness and care for her. Onwards to your last comment that was gobsmacking to me! I said: "I'd try harder where R is concerned if you're set on them as one of your ROs." This was about Naia trying to give R more credit, not to give C any pass or credit unless they have earned it. You don't need to worry about playing nice with C or kissing their (great) ass. Even R has a more catty/unique/clashing/confounding dynamic with C, so why would they logically expect the MC to flatter them? There is much more to what's going on than romance angst. C isn't a constant ever-presence in R's life. One thing to consider is: how R behaves around C versus around the gang and especially around the MC. The choice is yours whether to continue your solo R-mancer route; however, I'm confident in their ability to earn Naia's heart and trust if she'll permit them to.

For Mal, I totally understand—Naia would never “hop on the Mal train”, anyway (she’s too drawn to R, and too dedicated for that, and I think Aizhan would hop universes and kick her ass if she tried, because Mal is her man), but I could totally see how some R-mancers would do that when the insecurity gets too intense, and I could see Naia maybe seeking comfort from someone who seems to care (since, at this point, she would not call on R if she needed support). It’s why her R-mancing JR-crush run has her with James as her bff (because she can’t fight that connection, either). On her R-mancing R-crush run (who has Silas as her bff, instead of Jane, strangely enough), she kind of flounders when she gets insecure about Reese—and that’s where I could really see her leaning on someone else, or even calling on them if she felt they gave a damn (the abandonment thing is a huge issue for her in all runs, but it hits less hard on her JR run, where she feels more balanced). Hell, I even spit out a fanfic the other night where she turned to Alec (like that wouldn’t blow up in her face, since he has a crush on her!). I’m very happy R will be the one reaching out to her, this time around. Having him provide a phone because of the failed walkie talkie calls is very cool. I did not realize C hadn’t been at R’s since early morning, though. I got the “missed morning run” thing, but figured C showed up very shortly after the scheduled run and had been there ever since, which made it look all kinds of bad from Naia’s (and my) POV. It wasn’t clear (to me, anyway) that C had not been there since early in the morning (not sure what time their run is, since they had been flitting back and forth in front of TTP when MC showed up to work), especially since R had to make drinks for her or whatever, so perhaps I misread the situation. Or, more likely, I just assume the worst when C is involved. R wasn’t very clear about it, either, when responding to inquiries—Naia reacted different ways for each of her runs, going on the attack on her “worst” R run (and he was clearly pissed at the accusation), questioning C having the entry code on her R-JR crush run (and found R’s response of “yes, because I have hers” to be off-putting, since C seems to have secured a place in R’s life and Naia doubts there’s much room for her, between C and Mrs. V), but was more focused on him being upset on her JR run (interesting how, when she’s not so fearful of being alone she can focus more on R instead of her own feelings about things). For C… with Naia more developed, I can’t see her bowing down to C unless C’s behavior changes drastically (and we know that won’t happen). C having 24/7 access to R’s bedroom doesn’t sit well with her. She has that sixth sense (perhaps a side effect of the EA ability?) that tells her C is after Reese. Given your comment about her having to try to be nicer to C for R, I’m guessing there will be issues if the MC doesn’t kiss C’s ass constantly and accept her ever-presence in R’s life? I can see this going very poorly for her, and am wondering if I should keep her for the JR run and forget about a solo R run altogether, because as dedicated and in love with R as she is, she’s not going to take well to having to compete with C constantly. 😔

I literally cannot wait for the consequences of my past actions. (Jam shared A's cookies for B with everyone and Josh threw away the necklace 🫣) Jam is now "former frenemies" with A, I might have made that relationship backslide with my cookie choice. S made a connection, YESSSS. LET'S GOOOOO. CONNECT THE DOTS. I love S so much... I read their break up scene and it made me love them more actually. S, I will never break up with you again. 🥺 I can't wait to see C's stupid face, they're the worst (affectionate). A new nightmare, I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHO IS IN IT. I'm not reading the sneak peak. I'm not reading it!!! (I think it'll be sweet to read that variation for myself - especially since neither of my characters still have the necklace 😭)

Unparalleled. 💚💯 J can be so soft if the MC is actually wearing their half of the necklace on the night of the Corvin dinner; however, I'm glad you might also trigger the 'trauma' variation (where the MC has the necklace but sometimes finds it hard to wear) which can show J's empathy for the MC too. What happened to the Corvins can be uncovered in a few ways during this section; however, I love that you're keen on it. 🔎 (J would be proud of such an investigative approach even if a part of them might wish to shield/protect you from learning more. They care so much, ah. 🥰)

(J's necklace scenes will be poignant across the board, although the tone can differ based on what happened to the necklace and the MC's motivations. Like if it was burned or hard to wear due to trauma versus being trashed.) It will be both. 💚👀I really like how R can add their opinion too. Thank you! Those 'let down' conversations were tough to write--to ensure I captured the ache/bittersweetness and how the characters react differently. I'm very grateful that you and others have said they felt emotionally impacted by them; it mends my heart. 💓Speaking of mended hearts, *stares at you calling the ??? So, R is the one who will be calling the MC! They're making an effort to connect after time apart. You'll notice that a top-of-the-line phone was suddenly placed by the MC's room after they missed the initial walkie talkie call, not once but actually /twice/. (There's a hint about this in Chapter 1!) Keep in mind the time--how time flows. That walkie talkie call was in the morning, whereas the tea party was in the mid-afternoon (high tea time!); therefore, C wasn't the reason for that missed call, so to place blame on them doesn't work. In fact, R reveals that they overslept in most scenes with C coming over /after/ their missed time to run together. It was a quick visit, not an hours-long event or romp; C arrived shortly before the MC arrived which is why R is less put together with their shirt and tousled hair. (If C's visit was out of real care, to have a laugh, or to poke fun at R's rare lapse in punctuality will be up to you to determine. 👀You understandably seem less inclined to give C much credit (they haven't earned it! 😏), but I'd try harder where R is concerned if you're set on them as one of your ROs.) During the upcoming phone conversation, R will bring up C's encounter again, especially if the MC mentioned their insecurity or was more blunt with an accusation, but it always comes up about how R knows unlike C, the MC would come over to check on them out of care. There is softness during this scene for Naia on both routes if she's open to it! P.S. Part of this was in my draft reply to your email, so I'll just answer the rest of it here aside from being happy you're trying out more RO routes!( I'm also glad you like the levity both A and Judith can bring to the series.) You can only romance Mal if you've shown interest in them in Book One! 💞 There is no 'hopping on the Mal train' (as you said) in Book Two; it has left the station because of Mal's awareness. It's how the route is designed within TFS that lends itself to their overall character. I know that might not be the answer you'd like, yet it's faithful to them/their arc. Keep in mind, even in Book One, it's intentionally difficult to trigger their romance; you're rewarded for that dedicated interest in them. Mal will reward you, trust me.

I have like six different MCs for all the ROs and to experience as much content/variation as I can. Even so, they will ALL be keeping their necklaces! Cause the thought of making J sadder than they already are makes me feel physically irl nauseous. 😅😭 Definitely has nothing to do with J being my favorite RO or any thing. 🤫 (love my wife!!!! 💚💚💚💚) So excited to learn more about the Corvin’s, their whole deal, and ‘what !?HAPPENED!? to the Corvin’s. 🔍🔍🔍

I didn't have the heart to make them lose it in the fire--J needs to know none of them ever forgot him (especially Naia). ❤️ I'm wondering about this phone call with R. Naia would definitely not call him after the fiasco with C and the tea party (and R not answering on the walkie talkie when Naia needed him after the nightmare). If it's an option, she's sure as hell not calling him, for fear C is there... again. Though, on her JR run, she would, since she knows she can count on J. Everyone can always count on J. ❤️
