Lacuna Rambles/Thoughts/Gif Reacts #1: Denial is a River in Egypt 🤪

[Alternate Text: A GIF of a river that is most certainly not the Nile River. It shows water swirling around some large rocks and tiny rapids disrupting the flow along with flanking trees. It's the Truckee river, which is located in California and Nevada. It seems to have been filmed in fall.]

(I searched 'Nile River' on Giphy, but a lot of crocodile GIFs came up instead of pretty water, so I went with this instead. 😌)

I'm certain most of you have heard the: "Denial is a river in Egypt" audio byte in certain edits/things!

Specifically, this ramble is about the Denial Overlay to R. Verner's romance route and how its exclusive scenes can be fun to write. I don't believe there are many denial! R-mancers here? I know of some of you are. It's a unique twist on the route that influences the burn and a few other possibilities. Some former rivals of the Verner heir might have a hard time coming to terms with these new ~feelings~.

One example is how denial! MCs won't take R's flowers into their room after the RO excursion; instead, they leave them sitting out on a side table. 🥀 There is also the difference of what can happen in the convertible (the seatbelt!) during the date.

Here's another taste of how scenes can and will differ that occurs further in Book Two's plot:

Denial:

Reese

"Verner?" you say his last name softly before strengthening your voice. "I can operate a door without any assistance. It's very simple."

"I should hope so."

He's too close to you, resting one hand on the car door while his other braces on the roof line. Your heartbeat traitorously increasing must be because you're feeling caged in by Reese's presence—the confident way he is taking up your personal space. When his hand leaves the car's roof to trail lower, ghosting across your thighs, you should probably say something or smack him.

It would make sense!

A soft click comes from your seatbelt he just unlatched, smile turning attractively smug—no, annoyingly smug.

"I trust you with doors, just not with these…"

Reese smoothly murmurs that before walking away, while you grip the armrests for a second and then get out of the SUV to follow him. You consider getting his attention with a calculated retort when you spy Beckett waving you over, possibly for a word in private. Reese, Silas, and Jane are on the front porch, waiting around and talking.

Ruby

"Verner?" you say her last name softly before strengthening your voice. "I can operate a door without any assistance. It's very simple."

"I should hope so."

She's too close to you, resting one hand on the car door while her other braces on the roof line. Your heartbeat traitorously increasing must be because you're feeling caged in by Ruby's presence—the confident way she is taking up your personal space. When her hand leaves the car's roof to trail lower, ghosting across your thighs, you should probably say something or smack her.

It would make sense!

A soft click comes from your seatbelt she just unlatched, smile turning attractively smug—no, annoyingly smug.

"I trust you with doors, just not with these…"

Ruby smoothly murmurs that before walking away, while you grip the armrests for a second and then get out of the SUV to follow her. You consider getting her attention with a calculated retort when you spy Beckett waving you over, possibly for a word in private. Ruby, Silas, and Jane are on the front porch, waiting around and talking.

Not Denial:

Reese

He reaches for your hand, perceptive to if the contact is wanted or not before linking your fingers and elegantly guiding you out of the SUV. Reese smiles only after you're close to his side, walking together for the others to see, except they don't seem surprised. You consider saying more when you spy Beckett waving you over, possibly for a word in private.

Ruby

She reaches for your hand, perceptive to if the contact is wanted or not before linking your fingers and elegantly guiding you out of the SUV. Ruby smiles only after you're close to her side, walking together for the others to see, except they don't seem surprised. You consider saying more when you spy Beckett waving you over, possibly for a word in private.

Both scenes are longer than these glimpses, but you see how the mood differs! 😎

R walks with the MC without the denial overlay; there is more openness about the developing relationship. 🖤 I didn't want to spoil things too much since Not Denial is the more common route. I hope this glimpse at the difference intrigues you all. 👀

Ok, I know I'm late to this post but I just have to say: I know exactly where that river (or part of it) is located since I grew up in California and I am hoping right now there is no DEEPER meaning to our dear author picking the Truckee River of all places. 😬

chellyense

I don't think I've played the denial options yet, but now I kinda want to see what it's like! It sounds like a fun playthrough! Poor R, denial can be a strong mental wall once we place it there🤣🤣🙈

Lee

Lol, that is one of my favorite choices from Book One! 😌 I like how this overlay lets their be some push and pull along with a possible backslide. 👀

Aelsa Trevelyan

That... that does sound fantastically chaotic! 😮 I'm glad you love the denial route, especially R's energy on it with their quips being more pointed and how they're more inclined to challenge and test the MC. It has its own unique exchanges for those willing to endure the denial! (I almost included an 'aside:' comment about why denial isn't available for the JR pathway, lol. XD However, yes, you're right, though there is likely one other aspect that might take you by surprise: J's reaction. Naturally, they're going to respect the MC's feelings and they do tend to be more oblivious; however, it would eventually spark the need for them to say something--the difference in treatment. In general, yes, it would be harsh to R, especially given the insecurity they can express in the JR route while being aware of the MC's childhood bond with J. For this route's natural growth and progression, denial wouldn't really fit! I will let the MC tailor their interactions with each and realization, yet no true denial-denial because of the impact on the growing trio's bond.)

Aelsa Trevelyan

I'm living for how you bolster yourself with the other options before diving deeper into the denial run. 😁 That's brilliant! It could both soothe you and twist your feelings by seeing the alternative. 🥀

Aelsa Trevelyan

Their conflict is delectable; plus, I do enjoy the banter that can come with this overlay that isn't as teasing/light as some other choices. 🥇 I adore how you use Alex to check all the dialogue options before selecting their canon ones; that's how I would play too! (Lol, the lake aesthetic choice option is a unique one, especially how R studies them for a moment before letting things be for now. XD) Thank you! I'm glad that it intrigues you alongside your more canon choices for Alex. 🥰

Aelsa Trevelyan

I can see R saying something about being too irresistible while smiling at your MC! (Also, she is valid. 😌🖤) Still, I think it will be fun to give the denial route a try after you do their main route, maybe even some of its variances, to see how the burn and scenes will change. More R! :D

Aelsa Trevelyan

There is so much /tension/. 👀 I hope you have fun!

Aelsa Trevelyan

mc: Oh NO they're hot 😫😭🤡 I actually do have a denial R-mancer and it's so delicious and I'm glad it's a Thing. R just breathing in her direction sends her into a tizzy.

Sadie

I love the denial route. I live for annoying and smug R and how they tease and flirt (their smugness when the MC recognizes their own feelings is going to be off the charts. Never seen before levels of SMUG). I haven't played the denial date yet, but I think I'm going to use one of Aesla's premade characters to do a chaotic run - A Corvin crush on MC, R denial and Mal romance triggered. Jam would never... (Ramblings: I almost wish R-denial was available for the JR poly but I understand why it's not! The J and R relationships need to proceed at the same pace. It would be cruel to advance the J relationship and deny the R attraction at the same time... if I read R correctly, R would accept the denial and probably step back so J and the MC could be together.)

ckl

My R mancer is in heavy denial, but I always go back and pick other options for the warm and fuzzies before actually moving forward.

dasburnfrau

Man i love the denial route. The mental gymnastics the MC makes to convince themself that they’re not falling for R could get them an Olympic medal I do use Alex to check all the dialogue options and choices before deciding which will be the "canon" one. Sometimes their choices come a little close to the denial route (they didn't kiss reese on the lake, instead choosing the worlds smoothest diversion about lake aesthetics). Its such a cool dynamic

alex

AAAAA I'm definitely doing the Denial route once I do the ENTIRE common romance route. My MC couldn't restrain herself, she HAD to flirt with Reese✨️✨️✨️

Idiot Sunfish

Omg I need to play the denial route because I need all of the tension 👀
