Aaron Gulyas on William Dudley Pelley

We continue our discussion with the Great Lakes Lore crew but we go down a totally different road.  We speak to Aaron about his recent work studying the life and work of William Dudley Pelley and how it is tied to American Fascist Movements up until this day.

No more than all the Christian are. All forms of religion and spirituality can bend in any direction, it seems.

Surely not ALL the spiritualists were/are fascists, right?

Wow! This show had so much fascinating material packed into a fairly short time. Just let me make a couple comments. There are two types of pyramidology (actually more, but two main types of mystical psuedo-science). There's the idea that was popular in the 1960's and 70's that objects placed inside a pyramid-shaped device would receive "pyramid power". I read some of these paperbacks as a kid and their claims were fascinating albeit ludicrous- that food couldn't spoil, plants would grow at double speed, and (somehow) razor blades would re-sharpen if placed inside a small pyramid. The other pyramidology, that you refer to here, is based on interpretting measurements from the great pyramid of Giza and applying them to world events. Besides Pelley, it was popular with British Israelite theorists and key to the founding of the Jehovah's Witnesses. You guys really nailed it on the differences between the extreme right and extreme left! It was been my observation that because Marxism is secular and materialist, ideology is all-important. Leftists tend to have never-ending debates about doctrinal points. Fascism is much more about non-rational issues of heritage and "blood and soil". This is what allows Baptist neo-Confederates to march alongside atheist Nazis, Odinists, and extreme traditionalist Catholics in Qanon and Stop the Steal, etc.
