Hey everyone! Let me present to you the Sea Monster Attack, the first map for the Ships and Seas theme.
The seas of Wordal are home to terrible creatures. In the depths dwell monstrosities like none seen on the surface. From deceptive, tentacled snakes called "mermaids", to Eldritch Whales and Leviathans, or Krakens. Only the bravest -or most reckless- souls dare face these creatures.
Mermaids are enormous serpents that can reach lengths of up to 30 meters from tentacle to mouth. What sets these serpents apart from common Sea Serpents is the deadly protrusion on top of their head, shaped like a humanoid woman. When the serpents approach the surface, only the protrusion reaches about water. Any humanoid that sees it is caught under its spell, and overcome by an urge to get closer. When they are close enough the serpents jumps out of the water and consumes the person, whole and alive.
Eldritch Whales seem harmless at first glance. Besides their despicable appearance and tentacled teeth, they appear not much different from other whales. However, they exude an aura of hopelessness and despair that slowly consumes those nearby. At times they linger underneath a ship, undetected and out of sight. Over the course of a few days the ship's crew will be overcome by a sense of dread, fatigue and sorrow. Some survivors described these experiences as feeling surreal, like they are intoxicated, their perception of time and space altered. In time, these feelings will become overwhelming enough that they plunge themselves into the seas, sometimes entire crews at once. Beneath the waves they are consumed by the whales, often welcoming their demise.
Leviathans, also called Krakens are colossal creatures that are the stuff of nightmares of every sailor. They dwell in the open seas and attack swift and sudden. It's tentacles shoot our of the water, the Kraken grabs the ship and starts dragging it down into the waves. Underneath the water its colossal body is hidden, ready to consume its prey.
While most crews would do anything to avoid ever encountering these monsters, there are those that set sail with the intent to face and kill these monsters. These crews are made up of the bravest and most disciplined crews you can find. They set sail to hunt down and kill the monsters, then drag their corpses to shore and harvest them for valuable. A mermaid's head is believed to allow it's carrier to charm anyone they come across, and a Eldritch Whale's heart is thought to cure feelings of depression and hopelessness.
