All told there are about seven months worth of work just on this ship alone. And one of the reasons that it took so much time was due to the complexity building something that would function almost as a swiss-army knife. It serves the duty of a filming miniature, and a full size interior set. But I also went a bit mad, and decided that it also needed to work as a Process Vehicle.
A Process Vehicle is a vehicle which has been modified specifically for filming purposes. The oldest version of this was that a studio would literally cut a car in half, removing everything from the driver's seat forward. With a prop steering wheel, and a camera directly in front, this allowed them to film driving scenes from "inside" the car.
Process vehicles were used a lot in 80's television, too. These were less elaborate affairs, which consisted of a car with all the windows removed (to prevent reflections and glare from studio lights) sitting in front of a projected, moving background. The camera would be placed "on the hood" and film in through the windshield... like this, basically. But there's more to it than just that...
