Now, let's talk about the paintjob. My initial concept was far different from how things ended up: since this was basically going to be our Scooby Van to the stars, my initial idea was to give it a hippy paintjob. A dirty, beat-up hippy bus in space. But the more I played with that idea, the less it worked. So I sat myself down and started analyzing the designs of the ships of the era I was trying to evoke.
Overall, ships of the era tended to follow some guidelines. They were usually light gray, with a red stripe and sometimes also a touch of yellow - it seems like these traits started with the original Enterprise way back on 60s Star Trek, and became the defacto standard. Red, Yellow and Gray. So, that was what I went with.
My "hippie van" concept now replaced, I started thinking about what sort of stripe to put on. And what I settled on was a stripe design that referenced 70's muscle cars.... A MOPAR stripe. Down the sides and up over the roof, just like a Dodge Challenger. With a little cartoony mascot up at the front (which gave me an excuse to add some yellow) The Ship's name is also lettered in a manner intended to evoke the stylistic script used on various Dodge musclecars.
Add some panel lines, some surface greeble, and a little period-correct weathering and I had my starship.
Awesome.
